Wow! 70-79? What a special treat for Amaryllis! I think in CA, the standard heat setting is 68-70 for the day and 65-67 for the night. I heard that once start blooming, keep the A plant at a cool place will lengthen bloom duration. But how cool the temp be?

No way mine get temperatures that high, I am in the 68/69 during the day and about 57 at night, they seem to do just fine. Shrug!

Our heater setting is at 68F and at night 63F and my amaryllis still bloomed too when I first forced bloom them.

I agree that daytime temperatures in the 60s are fine. I have no experience at cooling them off to preserve the bloom. I have always treated them as cut flowers to enjoy them in my home, but that's just me. The blooms last a long time in water with a pinch of sugar, but probably would last even longer left on the plant. This would be an interesting experiment to try (temperatures during blooming) if you had several Amaryllis of the same cultivar, in bloom at once.

Surprisingly I found this morning that all the fall-over leaves of my peacock rose back with the largest one even fall back to the other side (guess this happened during the night) - see pic 1. I took a close look that the largest leaf fall-over to other side is tightly pressing the stalk! I figure last time all leaves fell over was caused by the strong stalk trying to push away the big leaf that was pressing on it and the big leaf lost the war, so that big leaf fell over and down all other leaves under it! And this time all the smaller leaves tried fight back and eventually forced the big leaf rise and turn to other side. I then tried to figure out how to release the big leaf from pressing the stalk preventing the stalk from growing straight up. So I released the leaf (baby's) held by a stake and let it fall on the rim - see pic 2. Then I used the stake to hold the big leaf away from the stalk -see pic 3. I hope this works all the way to bloom time and beyond.

Whatever works, Fiat. Your plant looks healthy.

My 'Elvas' is getting a second scape, which makes me very happy. The bulb is very large and the stalk is very thick and 19 inches tall, looks like she will have 5 blooms, should open in a couple of days. Hurray!

Here is my mystery amaryllis (sold as 'Aphrodite' but obviously not) in full bloom now:

Both White Nymph and Marquee were double whites available at the company we had the group buy with. Any thoughts as to which this might be?

I keep hoping one of my red ones will bloom while she's still blooming white--would be pretty together.

There is a photo of my White nymph in the plant data base. My bloom seems to have a slightly ruffled edge and the petals seem to be thinner ( more delicate?) than seems evident in your photo. Comparing your photo to the photos on your sellers website, your bloom looks closer to that of Marquee. That is only a tentative ID, based on what the seller is listing. Since the bulb is mislabelled it could be any white double. There are several white doubles on the market right now. Check out Arctic Nymph, Ice Queen, Marilyn, Pavlova, Snow Drift, and White Peacock in the plant data base. Your scape is so beautiful. Isn't it frustrating that you just aren't positive what you have? The mislabeling problem, in the Amaryllis marketplace, always makes me crazy when it happens to me!

Hi everyone...as a new member I thought I would check out how to start the bulbs my sister gave me a week ago. She works at a big box store and thought I would enjoy watching them grow inside. Being formerly from the San Bernardino valley we just planted them outside and that was it, they would bloom year after year. Now being in the 'High Desert' I have a lot of adjustments to make. The first year here saw the demise of most of my outdoor houseplants as I had too many to bring inside. Anyway my question is the bulbs came with pots and a disc of coir medium to plant them in but I would rather watch the plants grow in water. Also the bulbs have already sprouted but the leaves or sprouts are light yellow to almost white because of no light. Sad Will they continue to grow ok? Thanks for all the information and help. Thank You!

Pat, welcome to the forum. Check out the thread "My Amaryllis in a different growing medium". for info on growing bulbs in water. Tarev is the go- to person for this topic. The sprouted bulb will green up in sunlight and if you rotate it, the leaves and scape will straighten up. Check out Fiat's photos on this thread. They show a nice progression of growth in water.
Fiat: 9 our of my 11 bulbs from RC and WFF have broken dormancy. They are doing really well considering how chilly its been in my sunroom, due to the cold nights we are currently experiencing in Northern FL.

Pat, welcome to the board! Hope you get the info you need for growing A. bulbs in water (you can always ask q here) and wish you all the success and joy. Your zone 8b should be fine for A. bulbs? I am just (mostly) copying from Tarev's method to grow my bulbs in water (I am a beginner) and already enjoying lot fun. Now anxiously waiting for the bloom -Peacock first, then Samba. Update on day 51:
Peacock: 23" stalk
Thumb of 2014-12-14/fiat/8c00bc

Samba: 5" stalk
Thumb of 2014-12-14/fiat/d515b4

Barbara: Happy for you that your bulbs are waking up. I think a sunroom is aspecial treatment for A bulbs especially if heated and in good weather with bright sunlight.

Thanks for the Welcome! and direction. I'd love to sit here all day and read all the posts but my house already looks like I spend too much time outside Sighing! This will help me get the bulbs on the right track right away. I love all the hints and encouragement that each one shares! Keep posting those pictures so we can enjoy the process and blooms! Hurray!

Anyone notice that the loop of the stake I use to support my peacock's stalk has approached the lower fat part of the stalk - loop size almost match stalk diameter, and most likely won't be able to hold fattier part below. So time to head to HD for some larger size stakes...
