Severel generations of Schreiners have hybridized the irises. Rick is the present one.

If you loved the pink with the different colored beard. I think you need to take a look at Brevity. Or Decorum for a pale orange with blue beard.

Here's a link to a website that has a nice 'history' of the Schreiners.......can't make the link work, anyway, it's Brighton Park Iris.....pretty interesting!

If you follow the link to the Brighton Park Iris website and read the tab on the right titled "About B.P.I." you hear the sad story of an iris lover who lost his huge collection of historic Schreiner irises to borers: "In the summer of 2010, I had encountered a huge Iris borer outbreak that decimated my collection. I was considering closing this chapter of my life, but found it difficult to do so. In the fall of 2013, plans were made to rebuild the garden and search for the hundreds of varieties I once grew. In the summer of 2014, I will be planting a few hundred rhizomes."

Carlos has a wishlist of irises he's looking for to re-create his collection. He's also looking for photos of some of the cultivars. I thought maybe some of you who have a lot of the older cultivars might be able to help out. Unfortunately I do not have any of the irises on his list, although I might offer him some newer Schreiner irises when I have them available...and I may do a search to try to help him locate some of the ones he's looking for. Anyway I thought some of you might want to help an Iris Lover who is a bit down on his luck.

I have not contacted him yet...but may in the near future if I can find any way to help. For now I've got a date with my DH for dinner and a play Smiling ...so I'll have to look later.

I don't have any of them or I'd share. Hope he can get most of them back and growing again.

Borers sure can ruin an Iris collection. Been there, done that. Fortunately, I was able to salvage them all. I'll check out the Brighton Iris link -- the ones that I salvaged (in 1978) were all Schreiners Irises.

Cantina is one I keep looking at.. I really should get it...
The red Keppel seedling w/ yellow stripes reminds me of Drama Queen.. Differences in the standards and the striping, but too similar for me to add (if it were to become available).... unless of course it were a strong grower and heavy bloomer Smiling

Yes Sherry, I might pass on that one too, unless it was a strong performer...or had a nice scent! I'm hoping when I play around with making crosses to select parents that will produce irises with fragrance. I've noticed that some hybridizers have gotten to where they keep using their own irises for crosses and have bred out the fragrance. That's one of my pet peeves with roses, and many other flowers that are 'supposed' to smell good. Hybridizers choose form and color without regard to preserving the fragrance. Personally I think this world can always use sweet smelling flowers! (OK...I'll get off my soapbox now *Blush* )

Oh yeah, I forgot about a nice scent... That would pull me over to the dark side Rolling on the floor laughing

I've got about 60 roses... They all have a scent.. Oh well maybe not the minis... but it's too hard to get down to smell them these days. I had a friend who had bad allergies and chose all his roses on the basis of NOT having any scent. I think you could grow Osmanthus fragrans 'Aurantiacus' where you are. Mine just finished blooming, and it's perfume is divine! Don't get me going on fragrant plants Smiling

Photogenic is a beauty!

I've never heard of sweet olive.

Sherry, I would love to hear all about fragrant plants. I'm all ears! Green Grin! I think I'll go check out the fragrant flower section on ATP.

I used to have Photogenic I had a hard time surviving the first 3 years, then it did bloom once, only to fade away last year after that cold winter. Loved it's bloom, but the winter was too hard on it here it seems. It should do well in Calif. I'd think.

Today, I want the SDB Dancing Bunnies. Who could resist a name like that and it's cute, too. Smiling

There are a few photographs in the ATP database, but I like this one best.
