Here's the fallen juniper...

Thumb of 2014-12-19/UndertheSun/a22ebd The huge broken branch on the juniper next to the fallen one.
Thumb of 2014-12-19/UndertheSun/3d14feThe broken branch... Sad
Thumb of 2014-12-19/UndertheSun/257956The roots of the fallen juniper
Thumb of 2014-12-19/UndertheSun/d1559aThe fallen juniper
Thumb of 2014-12-19/UndertheSun/244154A view of the area from a close distance. You can see the tops of some camellias and rhododendrons.
Thumb of 2014-12-19/UndertheSun/698bf8A view from the other side of the fallen juniper.
Thumb of 2014-12-19/UndertheSun/bd2dd1Another view...you can see how nice the top of it was.
Thumb of 2014-12-19/UndertheSun/a0b0f1A view of another (undamaged *knock on wood*)area I have these large junipers. They are around 20-25 feet tall.

Another tree guy came today with the same bad news...it can't be saved. Crying It would survive how it is....but I can't leave it like that. Thumbs down It landed on my dead lawn and right in the middle of the walkway leading up to the hillside. I dug out some plants, but I have to dig out more before I cut it down.

The tree guy said these are Hollywood Junipers.

Sighing!

Oh, again Rob, I'm so sorry. Sad Those are beautiful trees. Can the other one be saved? I think you said it just had the broken branch?

I think he misidentified the type of junipers they are. Mine don't match any photos I looked at and mine grow a whole lot bigger than Hollywood.

Yes, Mary Ann, the other one can be saved. I just need to reshape it and hope it fills in a bit more.

The photo of the one you titled "The roots of the fallen juniper" looks like it could be saved. I'd get a block and tackle and pull it back up and secure it. I did that to an ash once that looked worse then that, and it did just fine. You won't loose anything if you try. A two ton block and tacle will cost you less then $25. Just need something to anchor it to. You might need to water them a lot next summer if it's dry again, as it's lost some of its roots. If it can live tipped over, it can live pulled back up. You would need to keep it supported for a year or so until the roots are re-anchored. I'd get it done while the ground is still wet. Good luck! Smiling

I agree with Tom. It is worth a try. Granted the tree has been stressed due to drought but junipers can adapt to almost anything. Some of the roots are still undamaged and the sooner you can get it upright the better chance of saving it. The main thing, as Tom said, is to anchor it once it is upright. Then treat it like a newly planted specimen and baby it. A Big John Digger cuts a lot of tree roots and re-plants junipers as big as this one is. Whatever you decide to do, good luck!

Wondering if it can be anchored by tying it to surrounding trees, in addition to ground anchors......

Private eye is a beauty! Thumbs up

I'm soaked to the bone because I took the chainsaw to the broken branch...while it was raining. That alone filled up my truck high enough where I can't see out the back window. There's no rain in the forecast for the next several days, I just couldn't wait.

Thanks for all the tips and well wishes! Group hug I'll look into a block and tackle and/or other means of standing it upright. I need to look into cables and rods/stakes to hold it in place once it's upright.

I hope I never see an iris named Razzing Rob. Glare .... Green Grin!
