And palms are blooming in earnest by now, but they don't make anyone say, "Wow" except other plant nerds. :+)

'Tis the season to give a little fertilizer to any plants that could be reasonably expected to bloom during the shorter, cooler days. I've added a few more orchids to my collection.

What have you found, to have blooms inside over winter? How do you care for it to get it to bloom?

Approaching the start of winter bloom season again. Maybe a little soon to get into that but the more plants I collect that provide winter blooms, the less gloomy I get when I think about bringing plants back inside.

This is a good time to give a little fert if it's been a while. I'm going to get back to doing that next weekend. I've taken the summer off from fert, too much effort when it's too hot.

What plants of yours are scheduled to bloom soon?

I was "leveling" Christmas cactus stems today, removing any immature leaves from the ends of the branches. Those leaves don't produce as many blooms, if any.

Also time to pinch the growth tip of Kalanchoe stems so they grow more branches. More branches = more blooms.

Should also see inflorescences starting to form soon on Dracaena fragrans. That's always exciting. Parlor palms are starting to send out bloom spikes. Those are a little messy but I enjoy them more every year.

Also soon time to grab the best Callisia fragrans stems and find a pot for them. Those can make the whole house smell good.

I'd like to wash our windows too. Need to solicit my son to help, he's much taller than me. I know that would make a big difference and let in more light. It's been a few yrs since most of them had a good cleaning.

Thanks for the note that I can still give gentle fertilizer.
I have a large and a small 'seasonal' cactus (Xmas/ Tgving) that can sit behind the garage till much cooler. It is dark there at night. Interesting note about the tiny leaves Thinking

Likewise, several common Phals will stay back there for some cooldown and longer nights- it seems to work well for them here.

I have two Cyclamen from last year, hopefully dormant and not just dead. Is it time to water those and try to revive?

I might be tempted by an Amaryllis - last year I bought one already forced at the grocery store. $10? seemed a good price. I have let them go in the garden after years of digging and trying to force. No wait, I may have 1 or 2 back there where they'd be easy to pull. They can survive winter here in chosen spots but I don't pamper them and they aren't reblooming well.
Plant it and they will come.

I'm excited to have orchids adding to my winter bloom collection too. I need to get more of those, less of other things that take up more room and are too picky about getting a ton of sun while inside for winter.

Hopefully somebody else will see your Cyclamen question. I can't keep one of those alive, but I think I've only killed 3 so far, so just getting started. LOL!

I've only had Amaryllis as a yard plant.

The Hoya that I have usually blooms Oct to November, sometimes into December.

I have a Cattleya that blooms at Christmas - Blc. Hausermann's Holiday 'Christmas'. Its got 6" purple flowers on a huge 2' x 2' plant. It definitely takes up room. Hilarious!

I grow cyclamen and amaryllis, some in the ground and a few as house plants. I've never stopped watering them when they lost their leaves. I'm not sure how or if your cyclamen will revive. The cyclamen are coming to life again with cooler weather so water them and Crossing Fingers!

Has anyone collected any plants with the hopes/intentions of them being indoor bloomers this winter? I don't have the option of putting some plants by a giant warehouse window this time around, so I'll probably have less of a show, but that will make the blooms that do manage to show up even more appreciated. I am seeing an orchid in bloom already, buds on Christmas (Thanksgiving) cacti, which seems early compared to previous years. Anytime they want to bloom is fine, I like their eager spirit. LOL!

I don't have any Holiday cactus but Daughter says hers has buds. I have an orchid (20+ years old) that blooms at Christmas. One year, it was our Christmas tree. This year, its been blooming off and on for a couple months. It will be interesting to see what it does at Christmas. Probably take a long winter snooze. Hilarious!

I have a house plant poinsettia. It bloomed last year. Crossing Fingers!

That sounds much more cheerful than the house NOT having those plants in it. Enjoy!! : )

I used to have other colors but the past few years, I've only seen white blooms. I move plants around so much, I can't keep track of which is which. Squirrels ate most of what I had a few yrs ago so I'm left wondering if the white blooming plant is somehow less tasty to squirrels?

Wish I still had the peach color. That was so pretty.

I have a big red, and a smallish, I think more peach pink, holiday cactus both with lots of buds and thankfully moved from outside to in without causing bud drop. And a geranium with a few blooms. I can never seem to make geranium thrive long term.
Plant it and they will come.

That sounds great! IDK how long I can keep Geraniums going. Still in the early stages of getting to know them, starting a 3rd winter. I think the pink one is gone and I'm down to just red now. Not totally sure.

Euphorbia milii can keep blooming all winter, when I put it very close to a sunny window. It never stops blooming unless I let it get too dry like I did recently. But new buds are coming in. I trim this often to keep it around a foot tall. Bigger would be fun but it would take up too much space and be more likely to "bite" me. Those thorns are not messing around.

During the holidays, aside from the traditional poinsettias, several other plants can add festive cheer. Amaryllis with its striking red blooms and Christmas cactus with its cascading flowers are popular choices. Paperwhites (Narcissus) also offer delicate beauty and a lovely fragrance. For something different, consider the Winterberry Holly with its bright red berries.
