Does anyone else keep a list of possible names for seedlings? It's surprising how many names one can think of are already taken!

Jan, haven't gotten into hybridizing Iris, but I do for Daylilies. Smiling

I've long had a list of possible names for daylily seedlings. I've started thinking of names that I could use for any potential iris seedlings.

It's surprising what can potentially be a good name, including names of game characters that we have had. (This family is heavily into computer and online massively multiplayer games (DH and DD more so than me), so there are several character names (from our World of Warcraft days, for example) that we have used that I can draw on.)

Also possibles... places of scenic beauty that you may have visited, perhaps with a twist ('Tuolumne Fairy Tale' is a daylily that was possibly named in relation to Tuolumne Meadow in Yosemite (is my guess)). 'Glacier Point' is the name of a TB iris; I bought it at least in part for the name. (GP is a scenic lookout point in Yosemite which I have visited many times.) If you live out east, you could potentially come up with a whole series of names related to the Appalachians. And so on.

And then there are people names. I have to confess that I am not crazy about plants named for people; either they were named for someone I don't know, or maybe they were named for some (more or less) famous personality, but still... The whole [First Name Last Name] thing turns me off. But on the other hand, I really have no problem at all with plants that are named along the lines of [First Name Middle Name], which can actually sound quite romantic if those names are feminine. The daylily 'Rose Emily' comes to mind. (I don't recall ever seeing this done, but I can imagine the masculine counterpart might sound rather dignified. Hilarious! ) There have also been plants whose names are a combination of First Name and some trait, such as with the daylily 'Cindy's Eye', or the irises 'Lovely Lois' and 'Sara's Beauty'. (And need I point out that the names need not be human?)

If you have any special interests or hobbies, those could potentially be adopted or morphed into names. DH and I have long been SF and fantasy fans; there are any number of daylilies and irises with related names (why do you think I want to get 'Triffid' so much?). There are (or can be) plants named after cities (maybe a place that you lived or went to college, or some special landmark of the city), drinks, candies, and so on.

There are also many plants with faith or Biblically related names.

The possibilities are endless. I think that it helps to come up with a name when you don't, right now, need one. Keep a note book (or computer file) and jot things down as they come to you. Sooner or later you may have a plant that fits. (And if the name has already been used, yeah, sigh, that's a tough one... but you can modify or adapt as needed.)

And finally, as a last resort... I note that historically there has been some crossover or mingling of hybridizers from irises to daylilies (though potentially it could go the other way). I have also noted that there are a suspicous number of daylilies bearing names that were first given to irises. So steal as needed... Rolling on the floor laughing

Remember when you have to type a name over & over in a pedigree you an go mam keep it short, especially for the small ones. I have small notebooks with name suggestions scattered around the house.

Thanks for that wonderful post, Polymerous - what a glorious photo of Total Recall - that light! I've started writing name ideas in the back of my seedling cross notebook.
I'd like to add that double-checking spelling of names is a must, and for me, I prefer short ones.

I have thought of names but haven't gotten to the writing down stage, mostly because this is my first seedling attempts.

Even so, Leslie... I've been hybridizing daylilies for years, still have not registered anything, but I have a fair number of potential names ready for use. Hilarious! Record a name as you think of it - sooner or later you may have a plant to match the name (and hopefully someone else will not have stolen/used the name on an inferior plant Glare ).

(I still don't have anything I am happy with, though I saw a few daylily seedlings of interest last summer (which I am saving for the proverbial "second look" (actually, they need to be evaluated for years)), and I have some seedlings which I hope will be bridge plants to something better. Crossing Fingers! "Hope springs eternal" and all that...

(The reality, though, is that I do not expect to get anything ground-breaking or earth-shaking or like that... (out of *any* of my pollen dabbing endeavors). I just hope to get something nice enough with certain plant traits, and if I do, yes, I may then register it/them. I would like to name one for my sister, at least one for DD, and some for my dearly departed dogs. (Surely nobody will begrudge a name or a daylily/iris/whathaveyou for a dog?))

I've got a long list of names... and I was surprised that none have been taken.. I'm not doing any crosses, so they'll probably never see the light of day... but here's one that I just thought would be funny for a large brown one: 'Spud'

I like 'Spud'! Thumbs up ...and there is no TB by that name in the iris wiki - though I did not check the other classes.

Poly, what a lot of great ideas (and great images too)! I can't tell you how happy I am not to be the only one contemplating using the names of beloved WoW characters as iris names! Big Grin

I'm excited to see more photos of Smoky Dusk (almost called it Dusky Smoke Hilarious! ). He describes it as dusky wine color but it appears more dusky purple in the photo. I suspect it is somewhere between, which sounds gorgeous to me.

I agree, it's a beautiful iris and a great name. One of the Piateks that I have ordered is Smoky Romance, another name I really like.

http://wiki.irises.org/pub/TbP...

That said, I have also ordered a number of what I consider 'unpronounceables', like 'Wichry Namietosci' - and some that I bought last year (from Russia, Poland, Ukraine) are equally impossible to get my tongue around.

I too like the name 'Spud', although that in part is because it's the name of one of the dogs of our handyman - he has two and brings them to work every day...
