I've long had a list of possible names for
daylily seedlings. I've started thinking of names that I could use for any potential iris seedlings.
It's surprising what can potentially be a good name, including names of game characters that we have had. (This family is heavily into computer and online massively multiplayer games (DH and DD more so than me), so there are several character names (from our World of Warcraft days, for example) that we have used that I can draw on.)
Also possibles... places of scenic beauty that you may have visited, perhaps with a twist ('Tuolumne Fairy Tale' is a daylily that was possibly named in relation to Tuolumne Meadow in Yosemite (is my guess)). 'Glacier Point' is the name of a TB iris; I bought it at least in part for the name. (GP is a scenic lookout point in Yosemite which I have visited many times.) If you live out east, you could potentially come up with a whole series of names related to the Appalachians. And so on.
And then there are people names. I have to confess that I am not crazy about plants named for people; either they were named for someone I don't know, or maybe they were named for some (more or less) famous personality, but still... The whole [First Name Last Name] thing turns me off.
But on the other hand, I really have no problem at all with plants that are named along the lines of [First Name Middle Name], which can actually sound quite romantic if those names are feminine. The daylily 'Rose Emily' comes to mind. (I don't recall ever seeing this done, but I can imagine the masculine counterpart might sound rather dignified.
) There have also been plants whose names are a combination of First Name and some trait, such as with the daylily 'Cindy's Eye', or the irises 'Lovely Lois' and 'Sara's Beauty'. (And need I point out that the names need not be
human?)
If you have any special interests or hobbies, those could potentially be adopted or morphed into names. DH and I have long been SF and fantasy fans; there are any number of daylilies and irises with related names (why do you think I want to get 'Triffid' so much?). There are (or can be) plants named after cities (maybe a place that you lived or went to college, or some special landmark of the city), drinks, candies, and so on.
There are also many plants with faith or Biblically related names.
The possibilities are endless. I think that it helps to come up with a name when you don't, right now,
need one. Keep a note book (or computer file) and jot things down as they come to you. Sooner or later you may have a plant that fits. (And if the name has already been used, yeah, sigh, that's a tough one... but you can modify or adapt as needed.)
And finally, as a last resort... I note that historically there has been some crossover or mingling of hybridizers from irises to daylilies (though potentially it could go the other way). I have also noted that there are a suspicous number of daylilies bearing names that were first given to irises. So steal as needed...
