Sorry to hear that Tom, but I can understand why you didn't want to "shave" your settings.... Hilarious!

It's a task I had put off too long already, as I hate doing boring repetitive stuff like entering data. Now I get to do it all over again, Maybe in February. Rolling on the floor laughing

I've been off the forum for quite a while now, due to travel and other matters.

In order... (responding to quickly skimmed messages)...

Daphne, I have never tried garlic (or anything else) around the irises.

Leslie, I am so sorry about Mulder. Group hug

Mary Ann, praying for you and your husband.

Jen, congratulations (and what a beautiful name! Lovey dubby ).

I hope this is the place for this...I'm thinking of adding a daylily or three to the garden, which is mainly irises. I have a stand of Stella d'oro, and some small reddish ones that were planted 20 years ago and do well with no attention, except some water in the heat of summer. They're so thick that few weeds invade, and should probably be divided. A small clump of cyclamen blooms beneath them every spring. Would anyone with some lavender, pink, or white daylilies (or anything except yellow, which I already have) want to trade for ones I have...,or some of my iris rhizomes?

Jan, I can set you up! I haven't kept up with the names of my daylilies, and the "white" ones underwhealmed me, they just look light yellow to me (as Marilyn mentioned) and ended up in areas where I use soft yellows. But I do have some lavender, mauve, and plum varieties I'm happy to share. I also have several "pinks", but they mostly appear peachy to me (I think there are bearded irises closer to true pink than daylilies, I assume because they have blue pigments in their make up). Anyhow, happy to share any of the pinkish varieties too. I was about to apologize for my color OCD there, then realized I'm talking to an artist- she get's it! Hilarious!

Hey thanks Neall! That sounds great. I like peach too, and big and small. I have no idea when
to do this. Are they planted in the spring? or now? It's very mild weather here now and I can
divide...but it might not be the best time for you. Take a look at my list, see what you'd like, and shoot me a treemail, o.k.?

"Near-white" daylilies actually cover a spectrum of pastel colors. Some are creams, some are pale yellows, some are pale peaches or pinks or even lavenders. You really need to place these things near other flowering plants where the flowers actually are white (like Shasta daisies or white Pelargoniums), to see how much color there is actually in them. Thus, most of my near-white daylilies are in my Moon Garden, where the subtle coloration works well to keep things interesting. At least, that's my story. (For the same reason and in that same area, I suffer the bad points of various licorice plants, so as to have a tapestry of foliage color.)

If I were to send you any daylilies (most likely near-white), you'd have to understand that it comes with a risk of daylily rust (which in our climate, is just about impossible to eradicate). I wouldn't knowingly send an infected plant (or one known to be highly susceptible), but there are some infected plants in the garden, and spores spread. You might do better to take Neal up on his offer - it should get cold enough in his garden to kill off any rust.

Traditional planting times for daylilies are spring and autumn (at least 30 days before the first frost date). Even if Neal could dig now, I would wait for spring, Jan.

(Sez she who has several bareroot plants still soaking in tubs, which at this rate, won't get potted up until January... Whistling )

Thanks, Polymerous! I'll wait to hear from Neal first. It sounds like you're into daylilies in a big way! Thumbs up ...and you're on the west coast ...but, you're right, if I can bypass the rust that would be best.

More on daylilies (for Jan)... dark colored daylilies (reds, purples, Neal's "plum") in general don't do all that well in our climate, because the surface pigment tends to melt and slick in the sun. (Some are more "sunfast" than others, but the trick is finding those cultivars.) It is best to place such dark colored daylilies where they get afternoon shade.
