I have Salvia madrensis in front yard. I planted one in front of bed. It gets very tall, and it spreads. I keep digging it out and moving it to the back of the bed. The runners just keep popping up another plant. Not sure if it made it thru freezes, but if it did i can share some at RU.

Can a MS girl add something here???

I would not get my hopes up about a new variety. Last year my Hot LIps had a funny looking bloom on it, I have no idea what caused it, they went away and I never saw any more blooms of that color on it, I would say that it was not even a Hot Lips, had it not happened in my own yard on my own bush !!

Good to see you Sandra! That's a pretty salvia, even if you don't think so. Did you go thru a drought there too? Some of my salvias got smaller, and strained to bloom. I think they were tired and thirsty. I did see signs of life at the base of those plants this weekend. They must have heard me talking about digging 'em up for compost! We're going to have another freeze tomorrow. I'm not covering another thing! Go to the "show us your gardens" forum here and see my pond pic before our December freeze.....and further down a pic of what it looks like now. It's a bit of a change. Stop by anytime. Love the photo. Looking forward to the RU.... and Forest Hill!

Oh I loved the way it looked, but it looks nothing like Hot Lips. That was the only blooms I got that looked like that. The rest of them were as they should be.
I guess all salvias might have the ability to throw blooms that are not the norm--
I posted about that on DG when it happened. Here is the link if anyone would care to read about it there.

It would make a beautiful new salvia, but only had the few blloms that looked like that

How unusual! I'd be delighted having one unique like that..... too bad it didn't remain....maybe, if it returns (like a sport)...you could take a cutting to try & propagate it!

Mealy Blue Sage is always a winner. It's behind the gomphrena (red thing). Bee attractant for sure!

sandra, richard dufresne says salvia can "change" color like that. it's usually in response to the elements and should return to it's original color when all is well. i have had red greggii's appear pink for a time.

i wish madrensis would do that here. i had a plant come up last year. it was beautiful. didn't get so tall as it should but is was shaded. my fingers are crossed that it returns this year after snow in feb. who knew?

and on the salvia color change.....he said intense sun would do it too.

Mamajack, I dug umteem of those S. madrensis out of my flower bed a few days ago. Potted some of them up and sat them on the side of the house. All 18 pots perked up and look good enough that I'm taking them to garden club mtg tonight for door prizes. I don't think anything kills 'em! I'm just trying to move them from the front of the beds. They get 4 ft tall and droop over. Really pretty plant, but needs to be corralled....

I'd never grow much salvia but did get some Russian Sage and Salvia Coccinea last year. The butterflies and hummies enjoyed them.

I've been hearing so much about others that I ended up ordering a whole bunch of plant plugs from Vincent Gardens. My order came in today and I am soooooooo impressed!!! The plant plug size and root systems are outstanding! Am glad I went hog wild and ordered a bunch of salvia varieties!!!

If anyone is interested in adding salvias to their gardens please check out the post regarding their plant sale that Vincent Garden put on Cubits.

http://cubits.org/hummingbirds...

Ya'll really oughta order before the peak hummingbird and butterfly season gets here.

I've been gathering seed from this Heart-Leaf Mallow. Every year I faithfully gather 'em and every year I forget where i put them. If anyone wants to try some, I'll take them to the next RU. I know they aren't salvias, but they grow with 'em. And....I had a salvia I wanted ID'd, but the photo was so blurry (all 3), that I'll have to try again.

Was that the Velvet-leaf Mallow (Allowissadula holosericea) seeds, by any chance? I grow some of that one... does spread by seeds. It's a host plant for a couple of skipper butterflies.
