First time I road a horse by myself it was quite an adventure. I was not yet 5, had not started school yet. I had ridden with people but not by myself. A teenage girl was babysitting me and took me to her house where she had a horse. The horse was kept in a stable quite a distance from her house. It was a huge horse, probably medium but I was so small. She put the saddle on the horse, then put me in the saddle, she was going to get on behind me and ride with me. But the horse took off and took off fast. It ran down the street and across the main highway, I was hanging on like a flea to a dog, he was going so fast I had a hard time keeping my eyes open for the wind. Now I do not know how far it was or how long, but it seemed real long.

When he got to the stable, he stopped. I sat on him for a long time, I had no idea how to get off. He was eating some grass and I was just sitting there. Finally the girl came with her mother all in a panic. They got me off the horse and asked me if I was okay. I remember looking up at the girl and saying, Can I do it again? But they would not let me. That was the start of my love of horses that I still have. Now I think about that horse running across the Highway 101 and it would really scare me today. There was some cars there, one hit the brakes real hard. I often think of that person probably remembering a big horse and a small child popping up in front of him and thinking it would be good to just leave this redneck town. Lol.

Annmarie! You dare devil, you! Looks like you had a really, really good time! ... and your niece?

Can't wait to hear about the horseback riding. Oh my aching kiester.

Pie sounds good... did you all hear they closed a bunch of Marie Callender restaurants? All of the Arizona stores are closed.

My favorite pies, after my mom's, are made at Duarte's in Pescadero, CA. Aunt Emma would make them daily. Favorite hangout of Ansel Adams ... in the day. And where else can you get artichoke soup and the best cioppino in the world. Well, outside of Chiavari, Italy.

Aguane, Duarte's is one of our favorites! I always get artichoke soup & my DH gets a calamari sandwich, then we split a piece of pie. I also take my Mom there every year on her birthday. This year the apricot pie wasn't as good as in the past, so my DH & I had blueberry the next time we went - HEAVEN!!!! They have the best pie crusts, I've EVER eaten! But they get more and more crowded.... I called the day before Father's Day & couldn't get a reservation for lunch!

Sherry & Rebecca, I often make apple crisps, because it's easier to be gluten free - use oats and/or GF flour.

Yep, I have some rhubarb and strawberries waiting to be made into crisps.....life is good. The small shells I just used for the pasta salad today could be better, I'll have to see if I can find rotini instead. I made a LOT...will be eating it for breakfast, lunch and dinner tomorrow...

Woo-hoo, Annemarie! Wanted to do that in Costa Rica, but we were dissuaded by the tour company, as the operator had a bad rep. Great photo, too.

Rebecca, isn't it funny how those things happen? You might never have gone near a horse otherwise.

Sherry, I should have asked who is Tasha Tudor? Never mind, I looked her up. I DO love punkin pie...

Well, you should be here then...I made two....the way we eat pumpkin pie, I should probably have made three.

Tomorrow will either be Strawberry- Rhubarb Crisp or Banana Bars with Cream Cheese frosting. I mean, I really do have to try all of the Gluten Free recipes...see if they're any good or not. Jer kept asking if I wasn't ever going to bake again...lol..

It's been determined now for sure that the 'Eagle' fire that's been burning down here for days was indeed arson. It's now burned 14,000 acres and cost 13 mil and not contained yet. I sure do wish there were some way to make arsonists pay the costs of their deeds...

I feel so bad. I do very little cooking. Used to make everything from scratch; bread, pizza dough, pies, cakes, cookies, French dinners, Spanish, soups etc. Just not too interested these days. Maybe it will come back to me... I know where the pie tins are!

Liz, yea, what a fabulous, historic hotel and restaurant Duartes. I remember when the dining room to the north was just a pool hall and the farm hands would play, drink and fight and kill each other. Still didn't keep us away. I think the first time I had horseradish in a Bloody Mary was there. Love it!

I was in Half Moon Bay a year ago May... sure has changed! I moved from the Peninsula 17 yrs ago and have been back just a few times.

I hope we're setting up for a storm here. Big black clouds coming in. It's not supposed to rain but looks like it might! Sticking tongue out

Oh chicken poo, Sherry. That just sucks. It's one thing to have lightning start a fire but arson... no. To me there is only one way an arsonist can pay for the fear and damage and loss of property and life (human and animal). Sick mutha's.

It's either 94 or 97% of fires that are started in one way or another by humans. Mentioned on TV some weeks ago.

I believe it. Such a tragedy. Think is that someone is noticing tendencies to pyromania in their child over time. Something COULD be done to stop the behavior. I know of one, family saw what was happening and took the child to a psych for long term counseling. Ten years and no incidents.

oh Sherry that's awful! It really irks me when it is arson...or stupidity which is what causes most of the non-lightning fires near us. Grumbling It is my opinion that anyone who wants to go camping in the high country here should have to first pass a fire safety course Whistling Hilarious!

Horseback riding was fun...but oh ya! the kiester is feeling it now! Hilarious! I did great for the first hour, but that last 15 mins it felt like every muscle from the waist down was cramping and protesting Hilarious!

It will be interesting to see how well DN and DS are walking tomorrow Whistling

Much better than yesterdays adventure, it was over 100* there Grumbling

That's BRUTAL! When I lived in Menlo Park in an apartment complex one Sunday night it got to 100 degrees. Dozens of toilets exploded. Water everywhere. Bay Area and them thar' parts are not used to that heat... right? Even the foothills 'cept Sacramento and the Valley.
