Lucy, I grow BB Cranapple but since it did not bloom this year I don't know if it fits the reds or purple shades.

I'd like to see more shots of the same red iris from different people.
Gives us a better idea of how it looks in various gardens.

I agree. I like going to the database and looking at the different photos of the same cultivar. I wish there was a place to indicate the zone on the photo ID. I have started leaving a comment about a photo I post just stating my zone.

Nope -- it was Rogue that had more than one description to it.

Not only is Red Hawk called a BiTone, but so is Red Skies. I'm darned if I can figure out why -- the standards and falls are the same color. It may be because of the yellow shoulders, which appear on both. But I think that that is an embellishment, not another color. I guess we need to decide if we're going to be showing basic colors here, or limiting ourselves to someone else's interpretation. For instance -- if a red Iris has a yellow beard, is it a red Iris?

Shrug!

I was thinking in terms of what you see when you look at your Irises............

And one in the rosy/red tones. I'm not sure what other color categories Mary Ann has planned so I'm listing it here.

This has been an interesting exercise. In order to to post these I made a list of all my reds and separated them into either Self, Bi-Tone, or Plicata categories (I did not add the Bi-colors). It turns out I have 6 of each...a pretty good balance for not having planned it that way! Big Grin

There have been a lot of beautiful Reds posted...but Ready for My Close-Up is my favorite and on the Absolutely Must Have list for Mid-America...with Dragon Flamedart a close second...if I decide to order from Stout it will be on that order!

I also have a red noid...but the photo is not very good. I think it might be Red Hawk...so I'm really glad to see the excellent photo Leslie posted. It should really help me compare my bloom this spring! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!
Thanks Leslie! I tip my hat to you. Show her some love and give her photo a thumbs up!! Big Grin

Thanks Marilyn. Since Red Hawk may or may not be one color I will post my pics of it. One is in shade, the other in full sun. It is amazing how different one iris can look depending on lighting conditions. (I believe Jan asked for various photos of the same iris so here you go!)

Not that there are official definitions for these things, but Red Hawk is pretty obviously a bitone because the standards are a different shade of "red" than the falls. The difference is more subtle with Red Skies, but when a hybridizer describes the standards separately from the falls, and uses different words in the descriptions, it's a pretty good sign that the flower isn't a self. Shrug!

OK -- so my qualifier that we limit ourselves to "self" was inadequate -- should have said red self and red bitone Irises. All I was trying to do was prevent using Irises that were red and another color. Couldn't use the term *primary* -- because that does not preclude other colors.

Got any suggestions?

Seems fine as it is. Thumbs up The line between selfs and bitones is often pretty fuzzy anyway.

Up until fairly recently, there were hardly any "red selfs". It's seemingly the most difficult color to get an even application of color across the standards and falls and the falls are often closer to actually being red.
