I just love when we head down to Fl. in the Fall. There are always so many Hibs and Bougies at the stores there. Really different varieties at such great prices but then if I bring them home I have to overwinter them right away. Maybe I need to change up my travel schedule and head down there in early spring so I can bring back more plants and enjoy them all summer.

I agree can't overdue with pictures.

Ferenc thank you for sharing your pix of plants and fury friends. I especially liked how you sometimes hold and object up by the bloom to give us a real sense if size I tip my hat to you. I think you must have one of the most beautiful collection of tropicals I have ever seen. Thumbs up Holly, do tell where you are getting the Florida bargains. Does anybody buy plants from the Florida flee markets or is that a no, no?

Hilarious! Hilarious! Susan, I go to all the finest nurseries in Fl. Lowes and Home Depot. Hilarious! Really they have some beautiful plants that are just ordinary to the Fl. gardeners (I guess) but are wonderful to this northern girl. Instead of buying 4in pots with newly rooted bougies I got gallon containers for half the price as I would have paid here. I got some great plants down there that I had never seen before. African Milk Bush and Hawaiian portulaca. I picked up a pancake Kalanchoe for 1/3 of the price as the one in at my local nursery and it was bigger and in nicer condition.
I stopped at a couple of road side nurseries just too look at the different varities of Hibs and I bought a beautiful orchid at one of the flea markets.

I sure wish there were places close here to buy nice plants, nothing around here but Wal-Mart and they have cheesy looking plants, never anything different or nice.

On our way north for a week of spending time with one set of my grandchildren, we stopped at Jim Hawk's place to see his garden in person. Lots of everything there. There I swiped three cuttings from one of his hibiscus bushes. We wrapped them in moist paper towels and off I went towards my son's rented beach house near Pawley's Island in SC. See: http://www.debordieu.com/

First I left them in the car for a couple days but they seemed to be OK after I found them and put them into a glass of water, then I forgot to take them with me for our return trip and I called my son to mail them to me. Those poor little cuttings are going through hell and I have no idea if they will survive the trauma.

We shall see if my son even remembers to mail them next week. If I do get them, I'll need a name Jim. :-)

Fred, I take off all but the top two leaves a cutting, scrape the clipped end a little, and place it in potting soil in a small pot. Put it in the shade and keep it moist, but not wet. Have to be patient, but they usually root.

A friend of mine wants to air layer a prized Hibiscus, and believes some will root and some won't. Is this true??
