We have discussed before the merits of growing named varieties vs unidentified cultivars. Most of us grow both, and I love both, but I find the most helpful thing about knowing an irises name is being able to find a source for it. If I see an iris that I really like I ask its name and then I can find a source for it and either buy it or put it on my wish list. You may grow one I yearn for but without a name I will never find a source for it.

Thro' all the tumult and the strife I hear the music ringing; It finds an echo in my soul— How can I keep from singing?
