Does anyone know something i don't to get a Hoya to bloom? I have had one of mine a year the rest i purchased after that.I have heard some have to be a certain age or size to bloom?

Here's a list of mine,if anyone knows anything about them please share that info with me.I have found that no matter how much i research a plant the best info comes from people that own them as house plants. What fertilizer is best for them?I read to much fertilizer will stop them from blooming???

H. Chelsea
H.bilobata
H.'compacta' AKA-green hindu rope plant
H.compacta 'variegata AKA-regalis,rope plant
H.carnosa 'krimson princess' AKA rubra
H.carnosa 'krimson queen' AKA-tri-color
H.polyneura AKA- fishtail
H. curtissi AKA-stripes

If anyone knows anything any of these plants like different than the other please let me know,i don't want to loose the ones i have.Which like to dry out between watering, direct sun, indirect sun, temps etc...

Thank you, i have heard they like to be pot bound but when is pot bound good and when is it to pot bound.I have a Hoya compacta variagata, it is in a small pot & is definitely pot bound the roots are visible on the top of the pot.Every bone in my body wants to re-pot it,i don't know what size to go up to.I have never re-potted any of my Hoya's they are all in the original pots and soil, i haven't had any problems. They are outside but i will only let them stay out in rain storms if it's been dry.We have had a few days of rain after a month of dry 90 degree temps,i left them out. They are calling for rain again tonight my Hoya's will spend the night in their winter home in the bay window out of the rain.

I use a chunky orchid mix with either a good rich soil or peat added.Depending on what i'm potting i add more bark for drainage in my succulents, peat if the plant like to be moist but not soggy and a good soil for other plants then some i don't add anything.

I'm not sure what this hoya prefer's?? Confused Confused

Jelinda...hoyas grow very similarly to orchids. They are epiphytes, basically. When they feel secure and anchored in a tree (we use pots) they will start to grow and then bloom. That is the reason for keeping them pot bound. Hoyas like air around their roots as well...

H.lacunosa 'polyneura' AKA- fishtail = There is H. lacunosa and there is H. polyneura AKA Fishtail. They are very different. H. lacunosa likes warm, lots of light and lots of water. H. polyneura grows better in cool temps and prefers to be on the dry side.

H. carnosa and all of her cultivars is from N. China and likes to grow cool,dry-ish and gets along in low light very well. Hoyas are basically understory plants so few of them like direct sun all day...better on and off sun.

The clue to understanding hoyas is finding out where they are from and understanding the growing conditions of that area. I fail miserably with hoyas from high altitudes ... Some hoyas like to grow dryer in the winter because where they come from winter is the dry season (all hoyas from N. Australia)....
It's all about choices.

I was reading about the Hoya polyneura.I realized the conditions it said were good blooming conditions, were my current weather conditions. We had a cool front come through and are having cool nights & warm days (not hot).

It wasn't the easiest thing to do but i managed to get a picture, and i hope someone can tell me what my chances are i have peduncles or my plant is getting more leaves. They are all on the ends of hanging stems between either the last set of leaves or the next to last set. They all point down & they're really tiny.

Even if the picture isn't clear enough i would appreciate someone telling me what to look for when looking for new peduncles.I have 2 plants with old peduncles,am i looking for the same thing only smaller?

How should the plant be treated after peduncles are seen, fertilize with something like 15-30-15 or withhold fertilizer? I also read they don't like being moved during this time,is this true?

you can see a small stem sticking out between the second set of leaves, the full size leaves.

I managed a few better pictures.I sure hope these are peduncles.

Does anyone know of a web site that has information on Hoya's blooming?I haven't found any with any explanations on where to look for the peduncles on different plants,or what time of year different plants bloom.I got lucky with the H.polyneura maybe i need to go back to Christina's site & see what else i run across. She has so many plants & so much to look at and go through it would take me weeks.

If anyone feels safe saying if this is or isn't a peduncle on my polyneura
, please do.There are a good many on the plant and I'm sure they're not going to have leaves emerge from them.

That looks like a peduncle to me, Jelinda. If the plant is producing it, it means it wants to bloom. I wouldn't change anything you are doing. Are you giving it a fertilizer now? Hoyas produce peduncles from the top of the axils (where the leaf stem meets the vine) and roots from below (or along the stem).

'Getting' hoyas to bloom is a big subject...with a short answer. The plants know when they want to bloom and while there are ways to HELP them (by fertilizing with a bloom type fert) nothing is proven. Hoyas have their patterns (some are spring bloomers, year round, fall etc.). If the plant has what it needs to bloom, eventually it will bloom. There are ways to force blooming used by nurseries...but I haven't a clue and really don't want to know. DynaBloom is a good fertilizer...I use 1/4 or 1/2 strength everytime I water.

Most hoyas produce a peduncle and then a rachis to bloom and keep that peduncle from which it always blooms. A few hoyas drop their peduncles and produce new ones when it wants to bloom....

Enjoy!!!!
It's all about choices.

My Hoya kerrii variegata is actively growing right now...I love seeing the little tandem of alternating leaves on each node on the elongating stem..I hope to see that elusive peduncle sometime! Big Grin

Carol thank you very much for confirming my thought that i had peduncles on my H. polyneura.
I do fertilizer them,i looked at fertilizer's that said they were for blooming and they were all 15-30-15 & i had some at home with the same npk ratio, so i use it & add super thrive to my fertilizer. If the plant has been feed but still looks like it could use a boost i water with only super thrive added to the water.I feed different depending on the type of plant.

I read to much fertilizer can prevent blooming, is this true to anybody's knowledge? How often should Hoya's be fed is 2wks apart to much?

With the 15-3015 Blooming fert, Jelinda, I use 1/4 strength every time I water... I water when the plant is DRY (except for those that don't like to dry out... Whistling )

My Hoya kerrii being in active growth is almost at eye level to us..my hubby said, if it grows any longer he will snip it off..so I had to try and see if it is ready to be twined around again...luckily it was pliant enough! Hurray! Snipping danger now off Hilarious!

I got this unknown in a trade three or four years ago. It has a carnosa like bloom but the leaves look un carnosa like. I have no clue which Hoya it is.
