I just feel so bad that you lost so much to the heat.
Have any of you in the hot and dry areas of US tried using ice cubes instead of water for your semps? Just put a few around the plants. Will water gradually and cool things temporarily without getting water on the rosettes and steam frying them.
The heat isn't so much the problem (this is TX, after all....we're pretty used to the heat), it's the drought combined with the heat. We've literally had about 3/4 of an inch since March. That's just hard.
I've found that I can put the semps in full shade, and be fine. So, that's where I'm enjoying them for now. When the gardens fill out a bit more, I'll be able to tuck them in amongst the plants for protection. The Joviis are doing good with morning only sun. They are obviously more tolerant of our weather.
I am finding the Joviis to be more tolerant no matter what the weather conditions are like. : )
I am finding the heuffs to be quite tough once they get established. It's just getting them established that drives me up the wall. : (
I love my Beauty Berry bush (Callicarpa). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B...
And I just found out from this link that you can make jelly from the berries. I know the birds do eat them later in the winter.
Name: Charleen Alford, Florida (Zone 8a) Walk in Peace / I'm Timber's Mom.
Lynn, mine has beautiful purple/violet berries in the fall. the main plant but I have several growing up with white berries, I'm sure it came from same shrub. They all look pretty and Yes, the birds love them. They are fairly easy to start from clippings too....
I wouldn't try eating/making jelly with the white berries Charleen. What I read is only talking about the callicarpa with the violet colored berries. Bet that would really make pretty jelly.
They are native here. We leave them for the birds all though the woods. Although for the first time that I've ever seen, the drought got them too. We're buying extra bird seed!
Name: Lori Morrow Enid, OK (Zone 6b) I want them all!
I feel your pain Trish! They say it hasn't been so dry here since the dust bowl. You just can't water enough to get things going, everything here needs a big drink of rain water if it is going to survive.
Lynn, I have been misting my semps morning and evening. You said ice cubes would prevent water from getting on rosettes...is that another no no? I am going to kill my babies yet!
Lori, if they are doing alright then don't worry. Keep doing what you are doing. I think it's the combination of water of the leaves and direct/intense sun that scalds them.
Debbie said:Tee and everyone that posted shoes to the database. I love them. I wonder if my family would mind not finding one of their shoes in the morning?
Maybe they will think they just forgot where they put them.
