Well, let me put it this way, one day it is 90 and the next 5 days it is 50-60 LOL! I have more sprouts daily so things are looking up. Planted my zinnia seeds yesterday now hope the rain we are getting doesn't wash them out!
So glad to hear that you are soon going to get yours in the ground as well.

Hurray! are you growing any named Zinnias this year or just mixes? I'll probably do 'State Fair Mix' and 'Cactus Flowerd Mix'. All my Dahila seedlings are outside hardening off now, getting ready to be planted this weekend! Summer is finally here!!!!!!!!

More rain coming out way again. Still 20 dahlias with no sign of life, but it is early???
I don't know the names of my zinnias, perhaps when they come up I shall give them names? Glad you got summer your way. Was 80 today and will be 90 tomorrow then 60 and rain again, yuk!

No fair Candee We have been having some lousy weather and rain is predicted for tomorrow. It has been cold here for several days. I think it is supposed to get warmer next week.

Sorry Verionica, I have many that are popping up but many still dormant? Hope to see more in the next few days. I even bought one new tuber and no sign of it? Very odd they are really taking their time this season.

Relax. It's only a small setback.

You guys and gals should pop over to the Dahlia Cubit. I'm just dusting it off right now, but the more dahlia lovers in the world, the better. I'd love to have your photos and discussion added.

That Bishops Children (Child?) in purple is stunning, Steven. Love the dark foliage as well. Someone gave me seeds this year, so I'm going to use them on a corner of one perennial bed. Very cheerful in a mass planting.

Candy if your tubers haven't sprouted yet, you might want to gently excavate and look for shoots. I realize those posts are almost a month old, but I'd hate for you miss the chance to head off trouble and lose them. Same for the non-sprouter, unless it's sprouted by now. There are always some that come without the all-important eyes on otherwise healthy looking, even rooted, tubers. A major bummer!

It's so wet out here and cool- all time record setting wet for the start of Seattle's "dry" season. It's the dahlia's worst nightmare to try to grow in a sea of mud in 50-60 degree temps. Sad Mine are just sitting there waiting for some sun and heat to progress. On the upside, I haven't lost any (yet) and I won't have to water for weeks~!

I'll be back- someday!

Hi Annie! I am coming right over to check out your Cubit! I will join and add it to my watch list.
My 'Bishops Children are starting sprout! YAY! I just planted the 2 largest tubers I had, some of the tiny small ones had shoots but I don't have room for them all this year so they met Mr Compostpile.

Well, you're the second person to tell me that Steven and I would love to have you join whatever dahlia lovers congregate there. I'm sick of talking to myself LOL!

I'll double check my Cubit settings, but it should all be open to members, cubit members, etc etc. I double checked this a.m. and will ask Dave if a recheck doesn't fix things. Please check back and come to ooh and ahh over the dahlias of this season.

80 degrees- not a cloud in the sky and heading back out to plant................ Hurray!

A helpful Cubiteer helped me fix my Whitelist, so the Dahlia Cubit should be accessible now. Hurray! C'mon over with your blooms in hand when you have them.

Candee, are those wintered-over tubers or new ones? I always have a few start out looking great and then rot; ditto for those from vendors. I hate it when you're really looking forward to a certain one or two, and those are the ones that rot. Sad I encourage you, if you have time, to excavate and investigate the no-shows. Many times, it's a rotting tuber with sprouts, and that tuber can be trimmed, treated with Lysol or sulphur and replanted to grow. Those dahlias want to live, so if the tuber is rotting, it might be worth looking into it. If it's a case of tubers without eyes, that's a dead end story.

For the first time in years, after a very mild and much drier winter than usual for WA, I've had 3 dahlias come back when left in the ground. Usually, all tubers turn to husks of mush by Spring if not dug. Our Spring has been more like winter here, but today: 80 with blue skies, shorts vs fleece, windows open vs furnace. Life is good!

Annie they are my tubers that I have had for many years and just keep in the basement after digging and washing. I did check one and it had completely rotted. Haven't checked all the others, there are about 12 more that have done nothing so will take your advice and check them out this weekend.
Amazing that you had some come back. I just pot mine in pots and sink in the ground so I don't miss them when I dig them up in the fall.

About pots in the ground, I've got enough extra tubers to do some experiments this year and have planted some in 4" pots and 1 gallon pots in the ground. I'm very accustomed to spending weeks out in the cold, wet of November and December digging up clumps, so this will be fun to see what a single tuber in a pot plunked in the garden produces.

I'm working on an article on cutting dahlias Candee, so if you have any articles or posts on arranging that might apply, I'll be happy to link them to the article. I just struggle so with the facets of layout and lack of cut and paste, but the link feature I have got down pat! Hurray!

I really hope your dahlia stragglers show up soon. Given our horrid conditions this spring, I'm happy to only have one plant that seems 'stuck' and is undoubtedly rotting in the wet ground. I'll dig it up tomorrow and see what's what. If the body of the tuber is rotting, roots will often form right near the shoot in an attempt to survive. Those can be trimmed, salvaged, and go on to flourish. Never give up on the dahlia!
