Oh Arlyn, you made me think of my Dad (gone since '84).. He always appreciated a good joke, and was a great story teller. Hard to think that he's been gone almost as long as the years he was in my life.

Yep, that was my problem too. But I had 3 very large and tall windows in my bedroom that had deep windowsills that were perfect for growing Orchids. Well I did buy to many, and I was into Slipper Orchids, and especially the Multifloral types, which were very large plants. So they cost a lot of money and I just kept buying and buying. It became to much to take care of, and some of the plants took years to bloom. I'm not getting any longer ..... so I switched to growing Irises and I'm very glad I did Thumbs up Smiling Hurray!

I bought one very expensive orchid a number of years ago and wouldn't you know it that was the one that I killed! I just buy the cheaper ones after that. I have 22 potted orchids on my table and window sills along with a few other type of plants.

When I was 19, my friend asked me what I wanted for my birthday.. I told her I wanted an orchid.. Back then they were somewhat expensive.. Well, I didn't know that as I hadn't priced them out, but when my girlfriend did, she decided it was more than she could spend. She got me a Spathiphyllum (Moana Loa plant) instead, which I still have. The orchid would have been long dead, but the Spathiphyllum lives on.

Every time I read the title of this thread I think - will I survive this year, let alone plan for next year?!!!

Yes, I have a plan. Build two iris beds for every one I think I need, and build them over the winter when it is 50 and not 95! Then take a vacation.

I am partly planned for next year. I have a list of irises I want. Its a small list of 30 irises. Plus the 11 or so I actually which will give me a tidy 41 different ones. I am going to an iris show to just look around, but wedding anniversary is in October but I see a early gift coming.

Richard - "Just 41 quickly becomes just 50 or so with vendor bonuses, then 60 or so when you see a bunch you like on ATP, go to the vendors websites looking for those ones and find one or two more you can't live without, then 70 or more when those vendors send bonuses and after that you are just all in and go ordering crazy. It just happens, so be prepared!

Nola thought her iris were not big enough this year because of drought. She sent me doubles and triples of many. They are all bigger than rhizomes we get in Maine and they are already giving me the finger. That was a lot of extra iris to plant.
Don't make fear based decisions.
