I agree Tara. My brown one has a spike again, second bloom since I purchased it a few months ago.

Here is an update of my Vanda NOID brown. These blooms are Huge....Love them! I'm feeling more confident in growing Vandas and I love that they bloom more than once a year.

And our Lowe's showed more beautiful ones...(see below)

but I think I will try my luck on Dr. Mote's orchids too...I visited his website and I am drooling on the number of beautiful Vandas there.

Thank You! Jim, Ursula, Ken and Alice. I think I have the Vandiction. I like it because it likes my mostly full sun area. I can't really grow anything that loves a lot of shade because my front garden gets a lot of sun. My back yard gets more than 6 hours of sun on summer times more afternoon shade in winter and spring.

My mom said that this is a good buy and she has these quarter terete Vanda orchids. Hers love full sun and Motes orchids has a Florida special for 12 blooming size Vanda's for $90 plus flat rate $12 shipping for Florida customers.

I have only the two, 7 yr. old Vanda, and I just can't make up my mind whether to list them or hang onto them. It is hard to get rid of an orchid that now blooms (at least) three times each year. The downside is the space they take up and having to hang them. Oh, what to do, what to do.

Ken, if you like the 3x bloom a year keep it. My mom said if you have a really long Vanda, you can force the top part to root (she recommends more than 5 leaves remaining on the base part and more than 5 leaves base on the Top) you can wrap the base with sphagnum moss in spring and it will develop roots. Once you have a lot of roots on the top part, you can cut it off and it should bloom the same time as the mother plant. The base will produce keikis or 2 but may take 2 to 3 years to bloom.

The two is more than I need, Gigi. I would be stuck with the same situation, only more plants, if I rooted the tops. Thanks for the info though.

I understand :), but then you can sell what you don't want to keep and it will keep the height of your Vanda at manageable size.

Disclaimer, I don't want to do it on my Vanda's I'm afraid of the black rot if I keep anything moist around my Vanda's.

I understand, Gigi, but the top growth is not the problem. It is the roots and the fact that they are in large, hanging baskets. Of course there is also the prolific growth of that Spanish moss. Whistling

I'm always a bit worried about shipping plants at this time of year. If they sit outside for too long when they're delivered, I've come home to a package of cooked plants before . . . Be sure you'll be home when they're delivered, Gigi.

I SO want to order these!

Thank You! Elaine for the reminder, I never even thought of the heat. I might wait a little bit longer then when it is slightly cooler.

I worry far more about cold than I do heat. Shipping warm-loving plants and with proper packaging generally doesn't end up with dead or even damaged plants. Of course, I am just used to the results (over the last five years) of the few plants I ship (300 boxes on average per year).

Your customers might not even tell you if they received plants that died of heat, Ken. I didn't tell or blame the supplier when this happened to me, since I really considered it was my own fault. Now, I generally don't order any plants from about May until September, as our front door where all the shippers leave packages gets afternoon sun.

Each has his/her own experiences, Elaine. The afternoon sun can certainly be brutal. My USPS, UPS, and FedEx delivery folks know to never leave anything at my front door. It is fully exposed to the afternoon sun like yours is. I can assure you, my customers talk to me about the plants they receive. Don't you think, after shipping out well over 1500 boxes of plants, I would get complaints of expired plants. My customers, at least those that have visited my website, know that I have a replacement/refund guarantee on everything I ship.

I feel so fortunate, except for the holiday season, we have had the same UPS, Fed Ex delivery people for the past 16 years. They all know about my plant obsession and make sure any boxes we get are left someplace in the shade. We were in FL earlier this week looking at real estate and it is hard to think about relocating when we have such extraordinary services here. One time I was in a store when the UPS guy was delivering something there and he saw me and asked me if I was going to be home in about a half hour because he had a package for me. That's service! (either that or perhaps I spend too much online Whistling )
