Gigi, I am so impressed that yours hang nicely. I tried to hang my vanda from a Live Oak and it is top heavy so it kept turning upside down. I wound up sort of wiring it flat against the branch in an upright position. I never did get the little basket off, those roots are are so tight they are almost embedded into the plastic.

Thank You!

Alice, The pink is the top heavy one because it has 2 spikes but I bought the 4 wire strings hanger, so it keeps the plastic basket balanced. The blue one is on a single wire hanger but I clipped the spike to the wire hanger, keeping it well balanced.

A co worker of mine has her vandas in the wooden baskets and she puts orchid bark in the basket to hold the Vanda upright but she lets the roots hang down. I might try that this year. She said the orchid bark prevents the Vanda from drying out fast on summer time.

That's a great idea about the wooden basket with bark. Thanks Gigi. Thumbs up

My Vandas are pretty top-heavy too, Alice. I just tie the stem to the hanger with a wide twist tie or that foam- coated wire you can get at any garden store. My biggest Vanda (that I'm going to top when I get home) is nearly 8ft. from the top of the leaves to the bottom of the roots and it's tied in 3 places.

Mine have no basket or medium at all, they're just fastened to the wire. They love their roots waving around in the air.

I know I am a bit late to this conversation, but we offer flat rate shipping of $12 for all orders. This usually works out well, but for the books, $12 is excessive. Therefore, we have always listed a code for those people only ordering the book that lowers the shipping charge to $5. Here's a link: http://www.motesorchids.com/sp...

Also, here is a link to the free YouTube video we recently uploaded for the first part of Dr. Motes's series on growing orchids in Florida. https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Enjoy.

Pretty flowers, Gigi. My two Vanda both bloomed three times last year and are in bloom (for the first time) now.

Thank You! My first blue one is still not fully recovered but started coming back. Then, I got it sunburned again...poor thing.

You sure did will with this one Gigi and I am sure the blue one will come back and bloom well for you. My little V. Saint Valentine appears healthy and has new leaves and roots but no sign of buds yet. Probably has something to do with me not watering it. Whistling
