Flowering yesterday. It is no secret that this is my favourite daylily, OLD TANGIERS. It glows, the surface texture is velvety.

You cast your eye across the garden and, despite competition from many stunners, it gets notice. Is there a reason why some cultivars' blossoms glow more than others? I often wonder why hybridisers haven't chased that fetching quality.

One of mine that I will keep. Milanese Mango X seedling. It is a nice orange bicolour.

Yesterday was early to work in the library on a Saturday and the day was later dark and dull from several thunderstorms passing or lurking. Photographing was trying.

Have you ever purchased American Revolution? I have that one and I seem to recall that when the sun got to it, it faded a bit and looked like what you have there.

There are so many daylilies, though, so that's really just a stab in the dark. Not to mention that many photographs of red-colored objects don't come out true to color...

Hello, my friend Crikey. Smiling

Didn't you have that seedling last year, Glen? I remember liking it a lot...I think. But my rememberer is faulty these days. Hilarious!

Beautiful, beautiful blooms, all. Lovey dubby

DogsNDaylilies, I dug it out of a mown lawn of an unoccupied residence. From what I can see the area was once a garden bed. They were all tiny things when I planted them. One of the ones that I also dug out was Kwanzo. There used to be a daylily farm just across the water on the mainland where I suspect these came from but the farm is long gone.

The red is about right in the photo with that unappealing muddy feel. 26", 6"

Now that I look at it, it's definitely not American Revolution. Especially not if the picture is very true to color...American Revolution would have a slightly more purple hint to it, even when its been washed out by the sun.

Additionally, now I see a darker red eyezone that I didn't see before. Hmmm...I'll have to leave the guesses up to the experts because I really don't know what you have. Shrug!

Good luck figuring it out, though! I'm sure you'll get plenty of educated guesses on here before all is said and done.

Debra, yes, Scott Alexander, now retired, never registered Crikey! I asked him about it last year. He said the cross was done by Curt Hanson when he visited the farm last century - he went around pollinating apparently. Alexander thought one of the parents was his BOOROOBIN MAGIC (also unregistered). Hanson in the article about his visit said BOOROOBIN MAGIC was a cross between ADMIRAL'S BRAID (Stamile 1990) and WITCHES WINK (Salter E.H. 1993).

Debra, sorry, lol. It was good I misread - it made me track down the genetics of Crikey! I made so many seedlings with it, too, before I knew it was an unregistered name.
Yes, I did have the Milanese Mango X last year. I have been watching it. It is a strong plant. I will decide on it next year. I am loth to register anything yet. It seems silly to do so when one might not be able to move a cultivar beyond one's own garden.

True. I registered one this year because I was so proud of it having survived several years of my neglect, and because the pattern reminded me of family. Will have some-very-limited stock to sell next year, but only because I sent a test seedling to Idaho, where it received extraordinary TLC and has increased six-fold to date. Hilarious!
