It appears that Akatsuka uses Volcano in many if not all of their introductions just as Carter and Holmes uses Mendenhall and/or Newberry for theirs. When I stopped at Akatsuka a few years ago every other orchid had Volcano in the name and if it didn't say so I bet Jim could find it in the parentage on his Wiz thing. I took a photo of their Paph 'Volcano Queen' which is nothing like the C. 'Volcano Queen' Bert posted. It doesn't take much to confuse me and they need some fresh imagination where names are concerned.

A Paph. would be nothing like a Cattleya, that's for sure. This is my source-picture from Carmela.

These are the photos from Akatsuka and their description. I've posted them before, sorry for the repeat. Their GH was shaded which accounts for the weird color, it was like taking a photo indoors and I did not use flash. If you zoom in on the description of the plant you see the name.

Love the one with the peachy lip myself, Lindsay. Good buys! My Lowe's had a bunch of really sad-looking shriveled Phals that had finished blooming. They were marked down but still wanted $8.95 for them. That's too much for me to pay for a "maybe/maybe not" survivor. If they have nice shiny leaves still, and are marked down under $5 that's my price range.

From the Wiz, I agree with Bert, there is no registered orchid named Volcano Queen. This is all about clonal names. For parentage: Rlc. Volcano Plum (Rlc. Waianae Embers x C. Maui Plum). As for Akatsuka, there are lots of orchids with that in the name, mostly Phals but some Catts. What else do you want me to look up?

Busy and rainy here today. I am just back from an open forum presentation at a local women's club and am now off to sing at an ALF. Tomorrow will be better.

Lindsey, nice score!!

My Ceratostylis retisquama or rubra is blooming again, this one likes the warm Summer temps.

LOL, Ursula, you are right - just not for sale. Frankly, I did not think it was particularly pretty either. If I could have gotten them home, I would have preferred some of their $3 NOIDS. A friend who lives on the Big Island says they are very nice people who have been breeding orchids forever. I don't remember which generation is running the place now.

I have 2 lowes near me..one marks the plants down when they are over the hill..the other one took these $12 plants and put $3.00 stickers on them...and they still had flowers! The roots didn't even have a chance to rot in the tightly packed sphagnum moss.
I love the Why Not...I saw it in person the other day...a great size, great color and just plain adorable!
Alice, was that price tag in some other foreign currency...Mexican Peso...Italian Lira? That's just crazy!

If I may, Alice? From their website....it is indeed $

Visit our nursery during the months between May-August, you will be able to catch a glimpse of our $20,000 orchid plant!
This orchid was brought from its natural habitat in Thailand in 1984, no hybridization, a real gift from mother nature.
It was awarded a First Class Certificate (FCC) for size and symmetry in 1991, it received 91 out of a possible 100 pts.
Propagation by cloning has been unsuccessful, so propagation can only be done through division. This is not the only plant like this in the world, but it is the only one of it’s kind with perfect symmetry and registered with the American Orchid Society.
Blooms once a year & will stay in bloom for two months. Learn more about this orchid.

Hm. I find $38 for a four inch pot a little steep. Guess I'll never see that one. Air fare to Hawaii isn't cheap either. Hilarious!

On the outrageous price tag, let's just say "they don't want to sell that plant" ? They're getting a little bit of media exposure by putting that big dollar amount on it, but it also says right on the tag that the plant is actually not for sale.

Anything is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. But that's some really cheap publicity they're getting.

I predict Lindsey will go crazy when we take her to Apopka. Hilarious!

Another beautiful show, Ursula. Your Why Not is now a Guaricattonia [Grt.]. Stand by for the next update in 20 minutes. I notice the C. Heathii is listed as either C. Heathii (1) (C. loddigesii x C. walkeriana). or C. Heathii (2) (C. schroderae x C. coccinea). Mr. Heath must have either liked himself a lot or there was a shortage of names back in 1907 when he made these hybrids. There is a lot of envy down here over that nice Phrag.

From the OC, (L. anceps, var. Guerrero x C. Hausermann's Sensation 'Ernie') is still not registered but I like the flower anyway. It has firmly attached itself to another plant and I didn't have the heart to rip them apart.

I am forever finding my plants sending roots through there mesh pots into adjacent mesh pots. I have so many seedlings (and some BS ones) that are jammed pot-to-pot in hanging trays or on my "tree-shelves", that I have to keep a constant eye on this. If I catch them pot-jumping early enough, it is easy to tease those pots apart. Wait too long, well, there will usually be broken roots as a consequence. Sticking tongue out

Patty, we never go to Apopka on a weekend, the discount orchid growers there aren't open. Some of the others are also at orchid shows on the weekends, so we tend to do a mid-week run, generally.

so Jim, are you saying that when I retag all my plants ..I should do it in pencil..so it can be erased and edited tomorrow when the name is changed...again?
I saw some beautiful Vandas at Lowe's yesterday..with double spikes in like 12 colors..and they were $27...I wanted one sooooooo bad...but I kept telling myself the Jim will take me to Vanda heaven , where they practically pay YOU to take the plants! Rolling on the floor laughing
I've sent some photos to my local handyman so he can get an idea of what I need around my space to put the plants on. I wish I had taken my free racks that I had in my greenhouse..but , oh well.
