What are the characteristics of Tangos?
Is it just the speckled center?

Anthony, do you think this is the same as yours. I (a little ashamedly) plucked two tiny bulblets from a neighbor of my SIL. They were above ground on the ground. They grew fast and I love them. Just not sure of their name.

Would I pluck them again? Yep :o) I'm so bad.

Hi Jo Ann, I've found different states offer different bulbs and this might not be popular enough to be widespread. It sure looks similar. The petals look to open up with more color, fading as they age. I would almost think it's the same. Mine is pretty open faced as it ages too.

One of my pet peeves is not knowing EXACTLY what I have. I can drive neighbors nuts asking questions because they don't keep tags :o)

If your talking about my pic od Royal Sunset. The overly bleached out color comes from a poor camera setting and taken in more daylight than usual.

I do agree about the fadeing as thay age. Some of the really dark lilies are sad.

Well, I'm going to go ahead and name it Royal Sunset. I think the name fits it perfectly.

Ok it's done!

I'll still take opinions tho :o)

Well if you are still taking opinions, and you are really a stickler for authentication, might I suggest that the correct name would be:

Lilium (cf) 'Royal Sunset'
or
Lily similar to and may be Royal Sunset.

[Confer (abbreviation: cf) = "compare to and may be" in Latin, and is commonly used in plant taxonomy]

The color renditions on my pc make your lily as close to Barcelona http://store.lilies.ca/cgi/lil... as it is to Anthony's or Jo Ann's. Frankly, I don't think it's either, at least from what I see.

Edited to correct aff. to cf.

Just so everyone knows, I was talking about Jo Anns lily. I thought Jo Ann wasn't sure hers was Royal Sunset, which is supposed to be what she received.

I have no idea what Sally's is, and wouldn't even guess.

Rick, laughing! I do like the latin name when I can get it. It's the only way to be sure.

Barcelona is close, but has no freckles. I wonder if I can try some potash next year and get a better coloring on it. Thanks for the idea Anthony.)

It is beautiful, which is why it caught my eye. I know the people, but I doubt she would even remember the name. Not really flower people other than to use them as ''decor'' on the outside. The rest of the house is lined with hostas.

Polly, I don't blame you for not guessing!! I'll have to go thru a few older flower catalogs and see if she might have ordered them.

Judging by the retailers and box stores, and other lily forums, I'd say Royal Sunset is a pretty common lily. I think the depth of color depends on climate, soil and sun. That looks very much like the one I had several years ago.

No no, Sally! Affine is a bonified term used in plant taxonomy. It is usually used when an identification of a specimen is uncertain. Real taxonomists and species purists like the term because it allows for better categorization of pure lines versus hybrids of same.

Anthony that nutsncones.com site is quite impressive, carrying lots of species seeds seldom offered. Very enticing...
