I think the fees are low, and the support is high. The thing I hold against Mike Longo is that he lives in Hawaii. I will never forgive him for that.

Let me be very clear. I wasn't saying I thought Mike's fees were too high. I am in accord with y'all about where I most like to sell/buy from. He's been very helpful when I needed something. One of the folks I know who thinks Mike's fees are too high charges outrageous shipping when he sells from his site. It's $25 for 6 DF.

Wow!

Never had one go that high. Good for the seller! You never really know what folks will like, so is always best to buy what you do.

Ok ... I fail to see the $150 worth of this cross .... what am I missing?

Maybe my perspective is budget-minded. I guess if the buyer gets even 1 good seedling of the 5 seeds, names and registers it, and then sells fans from it, it would be worth more than $150. I also don't see what the excitement is in this particular cross. Anyone "get it"?

"Worth" is such a funny word. It is a lot like "need"...lol. Maybe the buyer knows something we don't. Or maybe he/she just lost another against the same bidder. Maybe their bid button is frozen...lol.

Hilarious! I get that a lot when I show a particular cross I'm excited about. But then my crosses are not the typical mainstream dl.
Becky, I think what the bidder is after is the potential for near blacks with large white toothy edges. Could be some very pretty seedlings but..... Blinking

Char - Thanks! I now understand the method behind the madness of the bidders for this particular cross! Black flowers with white teeth could be a winner! But I still wouldn't spend $150 on 5 seeds. I guess this particular seller attracts high roller bidders, not poor people like me. I see that he starts his bids out at $16.99 which is out of the ballpark for me. He is from Belgium which is neat! I also see that there is still 5 days and 21 hours left before the auction ends! I wonder if the price will go even higher? Might get even more interesting! I had the same question as Becky did. Makes sense now. Thanks Char. Still that is a LOT for 5 seeds!

I'd like to think an inspired (or bonkers!) cross helps. But yes I agree

All are correct!

I know this will sound dumb, but the auction also helps in my own selection. I keep immaculate records. You have to if you sell seeds. But...I am not one to look back at pedigree too much in seed selection. I cross by feel mainly, on what I see open that day and what pollen it is calling me to use. There are some crosses I make that the seeds go directly into my keeper bag. Crosses that I had long ago planned to make. But, there are also some crosses I put in the keeper bag based on how they did on the auction. Bonkers or not, I think there is a tremendous amount of knowledge in the bidders, and I would like to think that they collectively know much more then I do, so each year as I cull down 10000s of seeds, I also listen to my buyers in some my own selections.

I can't tell you how many times I will be talking to the most wonderful Judy Davisson, and she will say something about a cross I have made, that it made such perfect sense because of background of X and the characteristics of Y. I may not have a clue what she is talking about, but you can be sure I listen....lol.

James, you are correct, of course. A good cross is where it starts.

Like Steve I make meticulous notes about how plants are doing, etc., when deciding my crosses and I spend the winter doing research. I also watch the auction to see where the market is. Often as not, though, when I get into the field to cross I go by what feels right. I pray for direction before I got out and ask God to lead me on the work with His creations.
