So far, what I really like about the veriegated hoyas is that they respond quickly to lots of sun. I have three veriegated (Kentiana, Krimson Princess and Krimson Queen) and their leaf color changes fast, just in a day's time of some nice sun. This is my first year of having them but they are kind of addicting.

In my area, my hoyas do not like too much sun, since it is too dry here. I made that mistake before and leaves of my Hoya kerrii variegata and Hoya KQ quickly got burnt. But I learned my lesson well, and thankfully the plant bounced back when I put it in a better shady location.

I love variegated Hoyas. I had a very large Krimson Princess for many years that ended up reverting back to solid green leaves.

Oh, that's still lovely. Did it revert due to lower light or just age? (If it's just age, I can relate... Rolling on the floor laughing )

Alyssa, I think it was just age ... it was in very high light for years. Unfortunately, about six or seven years ago I lost a few of my giant hoyas to a severe winter freeze. Sad

plantladylin said:Thanks Lee Anne & Alan! H. australis is an easy Hoya for me ... sometimes blooming twice a year. This is the most blooms it's ever had at one time and the smell is wonderful.

Hi Lynn, long time no see, just wanted to comment on your blooming Hoya, it is gorgeous. Mine have never bloomed, I am about ready to send them away .. :P

A question for the hoya lovers regarding insecticide. I have a hoya curtisii that has been in quarantine since I brought it home, but will be moving it out today with the rest of the plants. The people that had the plant before me, wrapped stems across and over the top, so there are lots of places for bugs to hide. Since it will now be around my other plants, do you think it's best to treat with a systemic as a preventive? I'm usually a preventive gardener, but since it's staying indoors, never going outside, and I'm new to hoya this year, I'm not sure if it's necessary treating ahead of time. Thanks!

Lovely Plant !
Inspect it to see if you see any signs of pests. You may have to actually tip the pot upside down holding in one hand and with the other ( or get someone to hold it for you) and check the undersides. I use an insecticidal soap (Gardensafe) particular as a preventative measure on any new plants whether they look like they need it or not.
I tip them upside down, spray the undersides, then right side up and spray again and let dry in a shady spot. "Most" Hoya pests will be either Aphids or Spider Mites or Mealy bugs, particularly indoors where air circulation in more limited.

I use the Garden Safe Insecticidal Soap too ... it can usually be found at Home Depot and Walmart: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Gar...

MJ, Lovey dubby oh my, your Hoya patella is so beautiful! I had a small H. patella at one time but gave it away along with some others when I was downsizing. Once we move and get settled I can really see myself getting back into Hoyas!

Thanks everyone- sounds like insecticidal soap it is, when needed! I sprayed it when I brought it home, and I haven't seen anything on the plant, which is why I felt pretty good about moving it out of the shower quarantine (and my husband is pretty happy about that too)...

MJ- those flowers are so pretty!!! Lovey dubby Looks tropical, and makes me want to go sit outside later on and have a margarita.

Thank everyone. H. patella is one of my favorites. Not the easiest of them to grow tho. But it's worth the effort when it produces blooms like that.

Nice! Thumbs up We don't have any photos in the database for Shooting Star Hoya (Hoya multiflora 'Variegata') yet so I hope you will consider adding pictures!
