Jo Ann,
That is a concern. We have a walnut tree by our driveway and we were worried what would happen if we got to close. So far so good.
Oh, well, I can see why you have been planning! NICE!!!
Those are so pretty. I was left with purple crocus in the end.

Sally, The tree we had was a cluster of 5 trunks, probably a nice landscaping idea 25 years ago,River Birch.
A horrible idea planted next to the garage and driveway. They shed all year round, one thinkie after another.
This is how it ended up

We have a walnut tree too, although the only thing that happens here is that no matter how many nuts we see growing, the squirrels have snaffled ALL of them before we get a look in! I don't really mind because I love watching the squirrels and walnuts aren't that expensive... I might feel differently if we had a diamond necklace tree! Hilarious!

Jo Ann,
WOW! Nice firewood stack. I am not sure if they are a good wood or not. It seems like they would burn fast.
One river birch can be pretty, but I wouldn't have one, or five, either.

Mika,
Hilarious! We have three walnuts and a silver maple. The neighbors also had two walnuts and they took them down. Their's had good nuts, ours don't. We do pick up and crack them when we get good ones.
Many many years ago there was a walnut shortage. I helped my Dad pick up from everywhere we knew there was a tree. They took them hulls and all. I got $25.00 for my help.

Sally, It does burn fast but facecords of wood go for in excess on onehundred dollars here.
Riverbirch are poor placed too near a house.

Jo Ann,
They trim the trees out of the power lines across the road so we pick up the logs for Dad. Since he's burning it in the barn he takes the elm and mulberry chunks. You're right. It all burns.

Sally, I thought we would need a year for the Birch to age. It is burning great now, hardly any sap sputter in the fireplace.

Jo Ann,
I'm with you. I thought it was hard to get newly cut wood to burn and that's why people have so much piled around. I know it will burn if it gets hot enough. That's nice that it's not sappy.

Jo Ann,
Sometimes I wish we had a nice indoor fireplace and then I think about the ashes that need cleaned out. You can only put so many on the garden. Dad will throw them on the sidewalk to help melt the ice, but then you and the animals track the dirty ash in on boots and shoes. So, I dream on.

Sally, I hated the ash problem, my SIL takes the ash to his business in the country. He keeps it in a trash can and makes a trip at the end of the season.

Jo Ann,
Good solution. You can also dip into the can if you needed a flittle to deter slugs or something.

Jo Ann,
Ammonia water. I'll remember that. I don't have slugs so much as snails. Never used to have them till about 9 years ago when the first grandson was little. Now we see them all the time but they don't seem to bother anything. I still crush them when I find them .

Keep in mind that ammonia is a nitrogen source, which hostas should love. I've known old country ladies who used a little ammonia in the water they used to water houseplants from time to time.

Good to know Neal,
I watch farmers put ammonia down on their fields but never thought I could use it out of the bottle.

Thanks Jo Ann,
Good to know when to do it.
I forgot to mention that ladybugs use my hosta for overwintering so I don't even clean them off till they leave. In fact, I saw one lady on top yesterday :o)
