Garden project, literally.
Planter boxes that will be filled with compost and dirt mixed in to plant carrots and other early small seeds like radish, onions, etc. Instead of using wire and ground cover again, DH is building cabbage beds. He'll make one more for cabbage and three more for broccoli. He's also working on a third planter box.

Mike,
Don't I know it!!

He's working on the broccoli screens. The boxes are done. I need to level and mix dirt for them. I'm hoping to start doing that. Trouble is, the compost pile is wet, I have to hand dig so I don't harm any toads in there and I'm sure the bags of dirt we bought are wet too.

Looks great Sally! I tip my hat to you.

I made great progress removing forsythia bushes from the new bed site yesterday Hurray! . The soil looks great- I'd forgotten that I had put old straw bales (from an attempt at straw bale gardening) there a few years ago. I found the twine while digging. It decomposed and the soil is fluffy and friable Big Grin There are just a couple more forsythia roots to dig, but I'm almost ready to start planting.

Jo Ann,
I'm really anxious to use them. Especially the broccoli and cabbage cages. He finished the broccoli cage today.

The chair has moved since we just moved the landscape blocks back. It was supervising the rhubarb. NOw it's back by the nearest planter.
Winter onions are behind the chair. We've eaten some already.

Between the planters are rubber tiles we use as a walkway. If you have to have a path you might as well keep the shoes clean.

I have the closest planter filled half way with mixed dirt and will.

The mess in the second picture are plants I had to dig and replant in the garden till I know where there's room for them

I still need to mix dirt for the far planter on the left. It's pretty level. I had to use a level for the shortest box before I filled it.

Thanks Neal!
I look forward to pictures of your re-vamped bed too. I love tearing out and re-doing.

I'm further along than I expected to be this early, which is great, but I must sit on my hands and refrain from filling the space too quickly- I've got several bearded irises ordered for that area that will arrive in July. It's really tough seeing available garden space and not plopping something there! Rolling on the floor laughing

Neal, The same thing drives me nuts. Plus I am not a patient person.
I have to leave myself notes in order not to plant where late plants are going. This year it will be Peonies.

JoAnn, have you checked out Swenson's peonies? I placed my first order with them last year and the roots were great and all are showing great vigor this spring. It could be that the varieties I chose are extra vigorous, but I think I'm going to see more first year blooms from their plants than any other vendor I've ordered peonies from. They have good prices too.

Neal,
I know the feeling. It is tempting to stick things in. It sure will look nice with iris!

Jo Ann,
Pretty peonies! I dug three old varieties from a place my SIL lived. I got a couple from another old house when someone bought it and and when we bought the property next door, got a really pretty red one. I have no room for any, but sure would love a new one.

I planted onions in one of the boxes yesterday. Stood there and pushed it into the dirt 2''. No hoe, no stakes and string.

We have grey skies and slight wind. I am cleaning a spot where I will plant Lavender Wee One.
This area has a built up stone retaining area. I realized I wouldnt need to weed every year if I packed it with sedum Tricolor and Corsicum.
I'm doing that today.
