I feel like I met two celebrities yesterday! I met Anne Belovich at a Seattle banquet held for the publishing of her book "Ramblers and other Rose Species Hybrids"! It was quite exciting and now her book is available on Amazon! I also met the Ludwig's Daughter who is a hybridizer herself! She mention Oregon might be a new location for their store.

How wonderful. Meeting them must have been so exciting! I have one of the roses Ludwig's daughter hybridized, Naughty Nude, but it hasn't really wowed me yet. I ordered it from Ludwig's and planted it in February, but it produced only one bloom all year, and that one was a typically unexciting maiden bloom. I hope it does better next year.

Oregon is a much better place to grow roses. I hope Ludwig's does move there.

Zuzu Naughty Nude looks very nice, I hope yours wows you next season Smiling
I also hope Ludwig's does end up in Oregon, its close enough I can make the trek down there, regardless of where they end up it doesn't sound like they are going to be closing their doors.

I was just on the Ludwig's website and it looks like Anja Taschner definitely won't be re-opening Ludwig's in the US - pity!

My youngest daughter, Anja, has moved down to the Western Cape and we are very proud to announce that her husband Talhat has taken over the management of our nursery in the Winelands. You might even see our grandchildren, Gabriel and Sophia, playing amongst the roses with your next visit.

What would "Teasing US" look like?
Would it grow huge quickly, have beautifully shiny disease-resistant foliage, then cover itself in rose buds that

Never under any circumstances open?

Or what?

In my Garden of Eden some rose buds would open to intoxicate us with their perfume.
I will give Ludwig`s a little credit for at least trying. ALL things considered, must have been a mess to pull everything(climate, soil, economics, inventory, etc.) together.
They`re probably a little disappointed too.

Steve Hilarious! I think you almost nailed it except for the bloom - probably only open for a day Whistling

Tisha, I think it is actually a big disappointment all the way round - Ludwig's themselves and their customers.

I know what you mean. I've been out in the garden today digging holes. I mark them with wood labels so I can remember which rose goes where. Roses arrive Monday. I think I'm up to twelve or fourteen holes and it feels like I'll never finish digging. It's tough because my garden approaches the point where I must remove almost as many roses as I plant. Gophers, drought, and frost have all helped things along again this year. There are more spaces than I anticipated last fall.

Still, I need another source of temptation like I need ... Whoa I keep forgetting about Roses Unlimited! Whistling

It's kind of you to ask, Tisha.

As a general rule: hybrid tea roses seem to fare worst. Most floribundas fare better. It's a rare David Austin rose that has any problem at all. Minis and polyanthas do well when they get adequate water. Of course, it's a lot more complicated than that...

Faves for ease of culture include: Cherry Parfait, Ilse Krohn Superieur, Mme Alfred Carriere, Marchioness of Londonderry, Chevy Chase, Zephirine Drouhin, Crocus Rose, Graham Thomas, Malvern Hills, Lady of Shallott, Parade, Nicole, Westerland, South Africa, Day Breaker, Julia Child & Chris Evert(when I spray for blackspot), Oranges 'n' Lemons, Europeana (when I'm in the mood to provide enough water), Marie Pavie, Jacqueline duPre, Larissa, Caramella Fairy Tale, Portlandia, Gourmet Popcorn, Calwell Pink AKA Pink Pet, Desiree Parmentier, Ispahan, Hermosa, Lady Pamela Carol (when I spray Liquid Fence), and Sombreuil.

James Mason is an easy care rose, even in shade; but I'm undecided whether I like it. Centennaire des Lourdes has pretty flowers, but it's not a very pretty shrub. Demokracie, Orfeo, Sexy Rexy, and Rise 'n' Shine (all in their fourth season), and Disco dancer show promise, but it's still too early to tell.

Among roses listed as HTs: Selfridges and Grande Dame thrive. Ascot grows like a weed. Olympiad gets by. Folklore competes with maple tree roots and wins. So does the floribunda Pink Parfait. Gemini, Fire Fighter, and Love are on the 'shovel prune next year' list; but perhaps they've not been getting enough water. One of three Double Delight survives - this HT I intend to learn how to grow. So far, it looks like Typhoo Tea, Illumination, and Lady Elgin are coming through their first winter OK. Interesting.

There are a number of HT roses on my planting list this year; I'm going to see if seven years here have taught me anything at all about keeping them alive...

I'm afraid by now you now know almost as much about my rose garden as I do. Not too bored, I hope. (My apologies for being off topic, too; but if Ludwigs is gone what roses are we to plant???)

The Ludwig people have gone back home. But they left behind many of their roses. You can still order them from http://agave-farms.com/. Wes sells them but he does not graft them there - it's done elsewhere.
Here's an email from March 3:

Dear Margie,

I am not taking any orders, but you could contact Wes from Agave Farms….

We will have some of our varieties available, but we will not pursue another location in the USA.
I have returned to South Africa.

Kindly,

Anja

Glad I read these posts. I'm in the metro area but never visited Ludwig's when Anja was there🙁. Ironically, we passed Agave Farms quite by accident yesterday morning on a downtown trek. They are located literally in the middle of downtown Phoenix. We were traveling in the opposite direction and the metro train was traveling down the street as I looked across the street and literally squealed at the DH "there it is, there it is!" He had no clue why I was excited and thought I was referring to the metro. Anyway, we had other things to take care of, so I did not stop. Want to plan a trip back there and check it out. We live VERY far from them even tho we are in the same city. Soon I hope🌹
