Hmmm -- I usually like purple veggies but somehow the idea of purple potatoes puts me off. Might have to try them just to challenge myself!

LOL, Jared started this thread almost two years ago, when I see his post moniker jnicholes, until just now I had been thinking that this thread was started by some one whose name was pronounced yini- choe-lays.
I thought he was one of those Latinos with weird names like JOR-GEE.

I recently changed my email address from "sjbreitenbach" to "fordriversandy" -- which is actually Ford River Sandy, but now it seems like it looks more like For Drivers Andy... oh well! Shrug!

RpR said:Having looked through the potatoes already available choices so far are:
Dakota Pearl
AC Chaleur
All Blue
Peruvian Purple
Desiree
Maris Piper

May change but all but the first two are ones I grew a decade or more ago.
The Peruvian Purple are absolutely the best tasting potato on the market.

Well I ordered White Giant instead of Desiree and the only place that had Dakota Pearl will not know if they have them again till Feb.
Just put in an order for AC Chaleur from Maine tater lady.
May order some more today, as one site said when new catalog goes in prices go up but I may wait on some to see what is new next year,

I mentioned the Peruvian Purple potatoes to my husband -- he kind of grimaced when I said they stay purple when they're cooked... Hilarious! (he also never understands why I need to try different varieties of tomatoes and peppers, so I'm used to this sort of reaction nodding )

Of the Blue ones I have tried, All Blue were the biggest pleasant surprise.
Right behind Purple P. for taste, to me, and as they are normal size potatoes, they are easier to use as they can be used for things like baking, mashed potatoes, etc. and where you might need a dozen P.P. six All Blue will do.
I had known they existed for decades before I finally tried them.

The last time I had them, I waited to the bitter end to dig them , thank God late freeze like this year, but the day I dug them it was well below freezing, sun had gone down and was digging potatoes that without sun look black, out of heavy wet black gumbo.
I had to use my fingers to feel where they were in the dirt. I was rarely so happy as when I dug the last plant.
I was cold , wet and miserable but they tasted great.

OH yes, Yini, ach I mean Jared with the silent e, got your PM. :0

Good to know -- I HATE dealing with a bunch of mini potatoes!

I also hate harvesting stuff when it's freezing out -- did that once with carrots, in a wet snowstorm. Sticking tongue out

Last year was the first time I've had potato beetles in the 30 years we've been gardening here. Sticking tongue out

I agree

Last year was also the first year I had any sign of downy mildew (not on the potatoes, on the cucumbers); I'm wondering what will be the new thing this year!

Wow, I forgot about this thread! I actually grew potatoes successfully this year. I grew them in 5 gallon buckets.

They were small, but delicious.
