I can't tell you how surprised I was this morning when I walked down to the garden and looked at the daylilies. First thing I noticed was that there were some aphids starting to show on several of them. So I went back up to the shed, mixed some sudsy water and a little ammonia (also helps with the snails, but I haven't seen any yet). When I came back to the garden and started spraying I found a new scape on 'Ming Porcelain' . Wow! I was shocked! That is way earlier than I was expecting.
I knew the weather had been warm lately, but still. Now I am afraid that there is still a long way to go till spring and that the freezing weather is going to return and kill this scape. So I may put one of my cold frame tops over it so I can at least cover it when hard frosts are expected. Still, I have low expectations of this scape actually making it to bloom.

Wow... that is very early. The weather here ((Atlanta area), has been on and off, but overall we've had a mild winter. Today we are overcast at 62F, with rain expected for the next two or three days. Freezing temps are coming back for sure, but spring is around the corner. I saw daffodils in a neighbor's yard.

I did a bit of cleaning the beds this weekend....pulling dead leaves and looking for any signs of that dreaded rust that I got this fall. I didn't see any scapes, but I didn't see any signs of rust either.

Let us know if the scape makes it!

Hey that's a great surprise!!!! I check mine everyday but no scapes for now. It's a mild winter here too, many DLs are putting out new fans and they really never stopped to grow. I have some EE variety I haven't see in bloom yet, this will be the third year so I really hope to be surprised as well!

My daylilies started to emerge from their winter nap about 2-3 weeks ago, but no way do they have any scapes yet. When is your last average freeze date there? .................Maryl

Would a cardboard box be easier to cover it with? Put a brick on top of the box to keep it from blowing over until the temp returns to warm (especially overnight)?

WOW!! I sure hope it blooms. My Darling Clementine always blooms before Ming Porcelain in Opp. I am going to look at them both in the morning.

Larry first you have a fasciated daylily and now you are growing scapes in Feb. You ain 't right.

I have four aluminum party tent supports I salvaged, that I use for the tops on a few small cold frames. Then when needed I have clear plastic with wood slats on each edge to keep the wind from blowing them off, plus black felt like black covers to put on when it really gets cold. They are very portable and durable and not much trouble at all to move around the garden. It is a very light weight setup and pretty versatile. I have one that I have metal mesh attached to, and also I have some nylon netting with wood slats that I can use when I need to keep critters out. It has proven to be a very nice "tool" to be used in many different ways.

I am thinking the main reason for both events is the fact the daylilies are planted in the bog, so they get a constant supply of water, plus all the tons of leaves and grass clippings I have added down there. There are normally thousands of earthworms working the area, even though at this time of year I seldom see them., but their castings are obvious throughout the bog bed.

Larry - Wow! Very nice! Sounds like you got the perfect land and tools for daylilies!!! I look forward to seeing all your NEW blooms this year! I know you planted quite a lot of daylilies in 2015 and plan to add more in 2016.

Yes I 'm looking forward to seeing new blooms from Larry's gardens. He seems to be doing well identifying them after the critters dig up the tags and the daylilies themselves.
Larry do you have garden maps? I seem to remember you showing me named daylilies in a triangular bed. Also want to see the seedlings bloom that you bought last yr.

About 3 daylilies put up scapes in January and I cut them off.
A few more have put up scapes this month (February) and I just left them.
We've had some slight freeze, so I don't know how they are going to do.

Scapes this early messes up hybridizing so I guess the best thing to do is freeze pollen when available.
Weather has been crazy and plants just get confused.

The only scapes I get this early are the baby seedlings.

That's really early. Almost freakishly so. I checked my spreadsheet, and Ming Porcelain's first bloom for the last two years has been May 10 and May 17, respectively. And that's in zone 9.

Last year in zone 9b, I had several seedlings bloom around the end of March. The earliest two seedlings bloomed 3/26/2015. With a few more following days later.

I haven't seen any scapes forming at all yet this year.
