Well, I have been away for 18 days I think, my wife's sister had a stroke so we went up to help. We got back late this afternoon, so after unpacking I went down to check things out. Naturally, a lot of the seeds I had started (not daylily seeds) had died. However, I was very surprised to see the 'Ming Porcelain' is almost ready to bloom, as a matter of fact, it might even be opened by tomorrow morning, so I will have the camera ready!

Seedfork said:I can't tell you how surprised I was this morning when I walked down to the garden and looked at the daylilies. First thing I noticed was that there were some aphids starting to show on several of them.

I've noticed here in southwest AR that the aphids have been unusually bad this year. Suspect a combination of a mild winter and cool days/nights after spring growth has started. I have several where the new leaves arising from the middle of the fan look like they've been shredded. Got out and sprayed with insecticidal soap early this week but then we had the rain that started a day or two after that and it's just now beginning to move out of the area. I am going to try using a systemic insecticide to try to eradicate the aphids. Hopefully in a month we'll see more ladybugs and other beneficial insects that will help. Otherwise, the recent rains have all the daylilies taking off and growing. Still another month with potential for frost but I cross my fingers. Hope the scape yours has will give you some spring joy!

Yes, it boomed this morning! Not the best bloom of the season I hope, but certainly an early bloom.

@Kabby,
I checked the seedlings I purchased in Mobile last March. Of the twenty five, only thirteen have survived through the winter. I am eagerly waiting to see what they will look like also.
I did check the other daylilies in the garden and I found a NOID with four scapes already formed!

None here yet either. Glare

I just had to spray for aphids after work tonight. I started noticing lots of yellow leaves. I hope soapy water takes care of the problem. I am also curious to see how soapy water affects the rust which I already have on a number of my seedlings and named daylily plants.

Just got in from spraying for aphids.

I called Dan Trimmer last week. Haven't talked in 3-4 yr. No problem involved, but I think we were both busy. He was so pleased! Good to talk with him, too. I promised to make the tour this year during bloom season. So many people I haven't seen in a long while. Will probably find some "gotta haves" during said tour.

Seedfork, I'm hoping for good things from Waves of Joy. I have 4 or 5 intensely patterned flowers that really make my heart sing!
