I replaced Indian Giver in 2015 after i died in 2013.

Becky, your seedling is a big loss since it cannot be replaced. Hopefully you get something as nice and better in the future.

I know when first starting or working on a small scale, the pretty babies are so special.
Not this year but a couple of years ago, we were excited about this seedling from the first bloom. It never came back after the first year it bloomed. It was never seen by anyone except Ashton and me but after this one, Ashton has made this cross again hoping for a repeat of seedling #11-024 in the future.
We have 2 seedlings from it that we hope to see bloom this year.

You may have noticed that this was a Sailing at Dawn seedling and Sailing at Dawn died this year. Looks like we need to use something else.

Terry, sorry to hear about your past seedling loss. It was a beauty, too! Good luck trying to get a replica of it in future crosses.

Oh! That is beautiful. I feel your pain for such a loss. You know, the thought had occurred to me that perhaps Dragonfly Dawn crossed with itself does not make a good southern parent. I have other seedlings of the same cross (DD x DD). None of them are thriving. But ...DD crossed with something else has produced a stronger seedling. I'm glad you mentioned that, Terry. Sometimes things do seem to lend a clue if we are paying close attention. Being relatively new to hybridizing, I've a lot to learn and discover. Good point, indeed. Thank You!

Beautiful Edgings is one of my last to start growth most years. It's a fast grower once it starts.

I'm sorry to hear of so many special losses. Crying Fingers crossed, they are just late risers.

Karen, I'm hoping BE is just taking its sweet time but it's not the only one. Sue, my established daylilies usually have no problem in a normal winter but this one wasn't even close to normal. All of my daylilies went through 3 cycles of growing this winter believing that Spring had come. It would get unusually warm for weeks & then the temps would plunge for a week or two. We had record warmth & record cold this winter. I'm afraid after growing and dying back three times the poor things are just too pooped to try again.

Don't give up! My BE is just starting to show growth at the soil. Maybe, It just wants to be fashionably late.

Lost 'Majestic Prime' this year. Brought it home from Floyd Cove in May. Found it a great home, prime spot in yard. All the others have come through OK. Hate this because it was the one I wanted the most, of course. Oh well. Will try it again at some point. Sighing!

Oh my goodness, sorry to hear you lost Majestic Prime, Bob.
It's tough to lose plants, be they prized seedlings or those just purchased.
Loss of hope, loss of beauty in the garden, loss of money, loss of well-made plans.
So sorry boys and girls for all the losses.

Bob,

We don't have a picture of 'Majestic Prime in the ATP database, but when I saw it was a Ginny Pierce intro, I had to find a picture. (Googled it.) What a beautiful daylily! I'm sorry it didn't make it. Sad that one might be worth purchasing again, though, if you're able. I love the bud and branch count she gets on her seedlings, not to mention the rich colors.

I think this is the first year in a long while that I didn't lose any of my daylilies. We had a very mild winter and so far, a very wet spring. I tend to lose more plants due to the wet, than the cold here though, so I could be speaking too soon. Crossing Fingers!

hi all,

we had a perfect, sunny day today so I went out to check on my DL's Lovey dubby

There were 2 that I couldn't find and I have to admit that I was too lazy to go ckeck my gardenplan Whistling
but almost all the others have MORE fans than they did last October!!! Thumbs up Thumbs up
(Except of course the ones that I would have LOVED to multiply, like Star of India, Boitzer Ocean Tower, Purple Cheetah and Starman's Quest Rolling my eyes. )

We had a very mild Winter and it seems most of my DL's took the chance to settle down Lovey dubby

Well, looks like CONNIE CAN'T HAVE IT...and neither can James. This one dwindled to almost nothing over the course of the summer and fall after it was planted last year, and seems like it's now gone to the great garden in the sky.

I'm back from checking my daylilies. The good news is I think 1 fan of Beautiful Edgings survived. A couple of other potential goners seem to have barely survived also.

The bad news is I'm fairly certain these are no more:

After The Fall (second try)
Aslan
Choral Fantasy
Confidante
Hampshire Hoyden
Mineral Springs
Moonlight Mist (always fussy)
Wild Cherry Round Up

I feel worst about After The Fall and Confidante. ATF did wonderfully for me last year and was my first bud builder. Confidante was gorgeous and seemed to be doing well so I'm surprised it died.

The very best news is that except for Choral Fantasy I made crosses of all the plants I lost. I even wintersowed Mineral Springs X Glittering Gown and have 2 seedlings up so all is not lost! All my seedlings seem to survive the winters just fine so I'm not worried about them. At least now I have some place to plant them!

Connie Can’t Have It has one tiny single fan left. I added it last spring. It is smaller than the baby seedlings I planted in Oct and Nov last fall.

I also lost another one new for me. Sports Coupe is gone. There are probably others that I will find missing as I work all the beds.

We see temperature swings often here. Most of our winters have these warm and cold cycles. Our daylilies are showing very strong growth right now. In two weeks we just went from 85 to 25 and back to 85 and now 37 with an overnight freeze forecast. We went from Feb 27 until March 20 without a freeze. We have a few losses every winter. My main evaluation for this spring will be our seedlings. I planted the most we have ever planted (over 3000) and some got in the ground very late last fall. Also 500+ growing in cups and pots outside all winter. I can see that in the cups and pots there is 30% or more lost. I can also evaluate two of the seedling beds that have about 300 seedlings in each. The loss looks more like 10% in those beds

I have grown Beautiful Edgings for a few years and this year it came out and started growing in late February. I divided it in early March when it was small. Now I have two nice clumps. BE has been one of our best.

I am so glad to hear what a good plant Beautiful Edgings is. I acquired that one last year and it does look good in my garden and is doing well. It shows rust resistance, too!

I wanted to confirm my suspicions that Calgary Stampede and Raspberry Beret died. I dug up both areas they were in yesterday. There was no trace of Raspberry Beret. Gone. I found completely dried, shriveled, dead roots of Calgary Stampede. Must have died a few months ago and what little is left was deteriorating. So, used those spots for 2 new cultivars! Hurray!

Just as I was getting hopeful that Beautiful Edgings and some others would survive I heard on the weather that next weekend we are expecting temperatures in the teens at night and 20s during the day. I may try covering them but I can't cover everything. I fear my list will get longer. Sad

I had no losses this year either. Our winter was relatively mild. We had very little snow at all this winter. My BE and several others never went completely dormant this winter.
