That reminds me, DH and I need to get a will done. It's really hard (and more expensive) if there's no will. Not that there is much we have for anyone to fight over, but still...

Yes. Very important. The state can take fees to do it if you don't. Plus will be so much easier to access funds for the surviving spouse ..it can be a real headache.

@gardenglory Pam, been there, done that. My brother had a great lawyer who guided him in his trust. Only two nephews to receive anything -- one responsible one (1/3 estate) and the other a small amount of cash which I'm sure he blew immediately, but since he received something, that barred him from contesting anything. The only thing that bothered me was the amount of money we had to pay to the IRS. Might as well have taken it out in the yard and burned it.

I've been trying to rehome extra plants I've grown or others I've owned for a while that I need to get rid of as they've grown too large. Some are tropical and others are for outdoors.

Found a gorgeous arboretum with thousands of plants in their collection, the place is plant heaven any specimens are safe and allowed to grow as big as they can get and they have classes to educate.

Of course I wanted my plants to be rehomed here.
My dad drove me twice, 40 minutes each day back and forth, paying $16 for parking, just to talk to someone about what I wanted to donate.

I was told no, that my plants are "too generic" and that they only want rare plants or something they don't already have. I told them many of my plants are grown by me, some are hybrids I created, and that some are too big now and I don't want them to die I have no space. The gentlemen told me "everyone says that to me, that's why we don't accept phone calls too many people call here to donate".

Call me crazy, but last I remember someone donating is being generous and generosity seems to no longer be appreciated these days. Even if they couldn't keep them they have plants moved in and out, all over the US, they contact many other arboretums which I'm sure do have room, why not give them extras?

So I'm very upset my plants were rejected after all that traveling and money spent for parking. 😕 They are dead if I can't find homes.

Keith ...

You have look at it from their point of view. They, too, have limited resources. Not enough space. Not enough funds. Not enough volunteers to take care of plants. Not enough people to pass plants along. Too many people who want of off load their plants.

It's simply impossible for them to satisfy everyone's needs.

Sorry you are disappointed, but this is how it is in today's economy.

Here's the facts:

.They do have plenty of space, so much they can build 100 greenhouses if they want and have over 400 acres outside.
.They have plenty of funds
.They have plenty of staff caring for plants and half are cacti I was donating which pretty much care for themselves and don't grow much
.They constantly exchange with other arboretums throughout the US multiple times a year, says so on their pamphlet so they easily could rehome some plants as most are under 5 feet and stay compact.

I understand they don't want to take everything, but most people only call to donate and aren't even willing to visit to drop them off, where I offered to drop them off and brought photos of every plant (with species list).

People are greedy these days, only wanting the best, and I'm ashamed at how people have become honestly... It's embarrassing. You see this so often I question why I am so giving anymore. Guess I'll start charging money for my stuff.

You know what they say one man's treasure....

You will have to take him at his word that your treasures are not what they seek. They dont have to be wasted.. Put them outside as was suggested with a sign. Donate to a habitat for humanity and take a deduction. Put a notice in the penny paper saying $3 or 5 or some ridiculous amt and use the income to purchase supplies for your hobbies. Have a yard plant sale

I give extra plants away at local plant swaps, they do them twice a year. A volunteer gardening organization also does a plant exchange at a city garden event every year and I donate plants to that. On occasion, I take native plants or seeds to a native plant organization meeting that I belong to. The first kind of local swap, there will always be plants of mine that nobody wants and I have to take home, but other plants are much appreciated and I don't ask for anything in return. The second one, the exchange limits accepting certain things, like aloe, for instance. I used to take lots of the prolific Root Beer Plants to that and all were claimed quickly...go figure, nobody else ever brings that kind of plant, so people want them. Nothing ever refused there as long as you follow the rules...# of plants per person is limited, etc. They give you tickets to claim other plants, but I give most of them away to other people. The meeting...well, usually all I bring will be claimed, but IF anything if is left at end of meeting, I take it back home. Never have tried arboretums.

I have 2 Elderberry bushes that came up wild in my yard. This year they are full of berries, so I picked some and made me a batch of Elderberry jelly. Just got done having a sandwich with it for a early morning snack. It is wonderful! There are still berries ripening on the bushes so I'll get the chance to make more jelly in the next week or so.

I just culled probably 700 bucks worth of daylilies. Nobody wanted them. It was hard to do, but I didnt want them anymore, needed room for the favorites, and in the end, it is just a plant. I also culled hundred of daylilies I had crossed.
Same with clothes, I have 11, 30 gallon trash bags with clothes to donate. At least 6 of those bags are clothes with tags. You keep them and keep them thinking someone will want these they are good stuff. But, as I believe Rosie said, one mans trash........lifes to short.

I wish I could take some of your plants, Keith - it seems mine (after being dug up and put in black garbage bags around the roots) are not getting to Torrington, and therefore will likely die........
