Blinking Lovey dubby What fun!! You can get bird's nest fern at the big box stores sometimes. If you like the fragrance of that ginger you should try planting butterfly ginger. I've had it growing quite a few years now and might even have some to share come spring.
“Little girl, why are you doing this? You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!” After a few moments thought, she bent down, picked up another starfish & hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied, “Well, I made a difference to that one!” Be the change you wish to see in the world. http://www.stillsthatspeak.com...

Nope - I grow it in the ground. I swear when I bought it years ago that it was the only very fragrant one I could find hardy to our area but now all the sites are showing 8 or warmer except one of my favorite sites https://almostedenplants.com/s...
Now...I will say that I have it in what is most likely a micro climate area. As you've probably heard me say (too many times LOL) my townhouse faces south-east and my front is brick. The gingers are planted between the cement stoop and the brick front. I'll mark an area so I know where I'm digging come spring. Remind me though when that time comes. I'll post pics if more of the bloom has opened when I get home.

Beautiful! I don't know whether I have a suitable outdoor spot for it, though.

My backyard is currently a construction zone. I'm glad I'm having this drainage work done, but I'm not looking forward to replanting everything I dug up from this area Grumbling . These pics show the former fish pond, now full of what I call milk crates. The crates were covered with landscape fabric before being covered with rocks, I think. Storm water will collect in the pond, with overflow going through a drain pipe all the way to the front street.

It'll look nice when it's done, I hope!

Thanks. I'll post more photos when they're done. They're redoing several paths as well.
Those rocks are huge, but at least I know they won't wash away Smiling

That is looking good Muddy! We started a similar project earlier this summer to direct the water from torrential rains into a rock filled ditch instead of where it was naturally going through my stepping stone garden. It was eroding the ground along the stepping stones. I used smaller rocks but I like the look of the rocks in yours. It looks great coming down your hill. Your hill is much steeper than the slope where I have mine, so I think the bigger rocks not only look good, but were probably necessary for the steepness. Just like most of my projects, we got sidetracked before finishing. I'm hoping with the cooler weather, we can get out there and finish it up before winter. All the functional stuff is done, it just needs a bit of tidying up the landscaping around it.

I started replanting around the "rock pond" today...got 7 large ferns in the ground...so it is looking better. It's going to take a while to get used to the look, though! I'm hoping we get a big rain soon so I can see what a difference it makes.

Here's how my stream beds/rain garden looked before lunch today. I still have some ferns left to replant.

#1 shows the view from my patio. I'm planning to make the end of the stream bed more oval-shaped by moving a few rocks and planting ground cover around the edges. I just re-seeded that area of the lawn, which always dies largely due to compaction by the flood waters.

#2 shows the view from the side of my house. I cut the Rhododendrons way back so they could put in the drain pipe and a new path.

There's a second stream bed right up against the fence. The pipes under the "streams" merge in the front yard into one pipe that empties into the gutter.

I wish I had rescued a few more plants before the work began. My Japanese Painted Ferns got smashed to smithereens, as did the perennial Begonias. Sighing!
They'll live, but look terrible in the meantime.

Fortunately, they have a nice long winter nap coming so they can recover.

Thanks, Aspen!

I screwed up somehow....saw my post in 2 places. Deleted one via "edit".
Then--saw that the original was gone too....No biggie...

I also just noticed that the whole format of MAG listing of posts has changed.
Did anyone else see this??? Am I going crazy????

OR??? is it because I posted on the "how MAG came to be"??????
Added a link. Interesting read for the MAG newbies.

yes, what a redesign of the whole home page!! Blinking For the most part, I like it-- esp the fact that you can customize it to your own tastes! Thumbs up I moved my watched threads back up to the top...

I have not got online from my PC, but I think the new version for handhelds is terrible. It looks like some temporary SW to be fixed, and I cannot go to my profile because the button doesn't work, or at least it doesn't work on my Samsung Tablet.

PS. After writing the above text, I did 'Preview', and this is what the screen looks like now.
