I took 2 boxes of books to the library today and added them to an almost-full donation bin. A librarian commented that lots of people must be cleaning their houses!

Ditto that! I turned away two people last week. 97% of what we ever got as donations went out the door to another charity. They just don't sell here, and we cannot use them in our collection. And we simply do not have extra staff and shelf space to handle them.
You wouldn't believe the garbage some people give us ( browned/yellowed paperbacks, frayed corners, falling apart..)
On top of that, HQ wants us asking $3 per hardback. More than goodwill or anybody.
The donation bin at the library is the best place. Our new director used that service in PG county. They will get the value out of the books if there is any.
Sorry if I sounded Grumbling but when I turned those people away, they Grumbling at me

Plant it and they will come.

There is a place near us that takes all books you just drop them all off and they go thru them and distribute them. They probably recycle what isn't good enough to donate. I have some old sets that no one probably would want but just can't seem to throw them into the recycle. So they will go there.

Here in AA Cty we have a non profit group that collects and redistributes donated books through local book sales and shipments of donated books to various projects around the world. Books for International Goodwill has helped over 7 million books find new readers. Wayne get lots of SciFi stories and I find great reads for my Grandsons at very reasonable prices.

We have a place in Baltimore City called "The Book Thing" It has been around for a long time.

It had a big fire which destroyed most of their collection.

Come and visit it sometimes when you are in Baltimore. PS--I have never been there--not being a "book person". BUT--I have a lot of books from my college days and I think i will tote those off to
The Book Thing some day soon.

We've sent many to BIG in Annapolis. They even used to pick up from some branches. We were so delighted when we found out they would come get boxes. The guy showed up, young, bearded.. not to be sacriligious, but we were joking Our prayers are answered, Jesus came for our books! Big needs a new warehouse, unless something has opened up for them in the last few weeks.

Book Thing was an amazing huge mess of ALL kinds of books. I didn't know they are somewhat operational again. Check here for latest info
https://www.facebook.com/The-B...
or
http://www.bookthing.org/

Then there's Operation Paperback which sends books to servicemen and women. You sign up and they supply the info where to send, you pay postage. ONLY CERTAIN kinds,

I'm afraid it could get expensive, not sure about that.

Will take a look at little free library Thumbs up

Ha ha Lisa, that's some heavy reading there!

Sally, thanks for the information about Operation Paperback; I had never heard of it before.
The postage shouldn't be too high because it would just be book rate to an Army Post Office in New York.

My grandies in MA have a Little Free Library in their yard. They like to watch people come and go. They also like to talk to the people that come.
I've taken books and magazines to a local senior apartment house.

Mark and I are now signed up with Operation Paperbacjk. I am almost ready to send my first box.
If anyone has good condition paperback ' guy reads' and wants to bring to swap I will use them.
A couple of VA hospitals are on the list for large print, but most people probably don't buy those.
Plant it and they will come.

Sally--
I am impressed how "into it" you have gotten by now in the Library stuff.
I remember when you started your job at the Library--it was just your JOB!

I love to hear how involved you have become in the whole Library/Book stuff.
I know I would NEVER be suited for a job in a library as i am NOT a book reader person.

Good for you!!!! I know you are enjoying your job. Gita

Have a gift certificate for Sooner Farms in OK. Do like this place. Thinking of placing a Spring order. Thing is, their S/H costs get pricey.
Anyone want to add an item or two? Heck, I can deliver.
Ahem, only coterminous US.
