I have heard that Pillar G is very effective against daylily rust. It is a granular fungicide. I plan on trying it out !

I do not think i have rust but i do have some yellow leaves on many of my plants. We only had 1 good snow. Four inches back in November and then a few inches at a time maybe 3 times. I do have something on a few that looks like white dandruff on some leaves but these leaves remain green as ever. The yellow on some is very streaky and i do not see brown.
Just saw some pics on the net about rust and looks worse than what i may have. This is our first solid week w/o rain so we have had a really wet spring. Could some yellowing be caused by the plants staying too wet?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have rust on plumeria, cannas, and my fig tree as well as some of my daylilies. Hey, it's Florida. We have every fungus known to man here.

Recently read a review (sorry I have to find it again) by UF researchers on a new fungicide called Actinovate. The package says it is rated for edibles, and for organic use under the guidelines of the USDA's National Organics Program. I'm trying it on all my rusty plants, as well as on my orchids to prevent their diseases.

Kevin, does the dandruff look like the bottom picture on this page (shed aphid skins?):

http://www.daylilies.org/ahs_d...

And does the yellowing look like either of these?:

It's not likely to be rust in your area unless you've acquired new daylilies from an infected garden this year. Daylilies like moisture so it would have to be very wet for them to turn yellow from lots of rain.

If you could post a picture of what the problem looks like it would help figure this out.

sooby i think you are right on both counts. I bet i have leaf streak and aphids. The aphids are on about 4 plats close together. The leaf streak i have on 80% of my plants. What can i do about it? Never had this widespread problem before. But its been a weird year.
Your first and last pics look exactly like my problems.

I have similar problem on my daylilies too (yellow leaves) but it maybe due to excessive rains (the tip of the leaves yellow and become brown)..

I hope you are right javaMom. I just remembered we had frost warnings in the middle of May followed by several days of unseasonal chilly temps here. I think i may be seeing frost bite as most of the problem starts down low on the plant and others at the tips. Overall my plants are the bushiest i have ever seen them because of all our rainfall. Like i said this the first solid week w/o rain since the start of spring.
Just in case though, i really need to start lining my plants out better and use my new spaces to further this along. So i will be really picky about newbies this year.
Secondly i need some new 2 ft. watering wands so i can water the soil and not the plant. These cost about 20 bucks each and i get maybe 3 years use out of them. One for now and a second one for fathers day?
I do have a aphid problem though so its Malithion time if thats how its spelled? Never had this before but they are on several plants.
In closing i never really said hello to all of you and how excited i am to be back right before BLOOM time. I added 60 new plants last year and promptly lost some tags but no problem there as i know what i have just not exactly where it is. Lol.
Sorry for the novel, hopefully some of you love reading.

I hope so too Kevin, since I'm a newbie, I am learning everything here.....if I get Leaf streak I will be upset..but of course all this rain and damp make all the yuckies stuff come visit... I got aphids awhile back and I've been spraying with Insectidal Soap, it's seems working...

Soap works for me on aphids, but mostly I just rinse them off with the hose, and that takes care of them. I'd save the Malathion and other big guns for later in the season, myself.

Well it seems i just have some normal low leaf die back. The aphids were real but do not seem to be a problem now that i have rinsed most away and the affected plants are no worse at all. I think i was jumping to some wrong conclusions. Even the farm where i help out is having some die back.
Weather has been strange with very wet early half of May and now no rain for over 2 weeks and temps in the eighties. Rain possible next 2 days and cooler temps in the 70s.
So now i have been watering and hoping for some rain when just 3 weeks ago wondering if it was going to stop. What can i say its northern Indiana, shorts one day and long jeans the next.

I got one plant so far that has major rust on a new plant this year - Tusk - so I tossed it - it was completely covered on all leaves. I did get it from the south. I have purchased many daylilies from southern growers and see no other rusty plants this year. And I can say that I received 2 plants in May from Lalambchop1 and they are looking good and growing great and do not have rust!

Last year a bunch of plants got rust from one plant, however, I cut it down and no rust seen on it this year - it is called Blue Me Away - it has not grown at all and I have never seen it bloom so it will be tossed next year if I see no change. I am in zone 5, so I don't really worry about rust too much, but it is very ugly. I worry more about Evergreens making it through winter. I have more issues with crown rot than rust. So, we all have our issues. And something is chomping on my blooms so when they open they have pieces missing. I have seen large ants all over the blooms - could it be ants? I thought bunnies, but they could not reach my tall daylilies so they are ruled out. I did see a slug on a dying bloom this AM. Could it be slugs?

I did purchase Green Magic from the Ebay seller that claims it will remove rust from daylilies. I will try it if any other rusty plants show up. It has other uses so I thought it would be worth trying as I can use it for other cleaning as well.

Green Magic will not remove the rust....I have two gallons. It works pretty well tho, if you start spraying ahead of the rust.

As for TUSK, it too got the toss here because of rust.

Thanks for the information. I will use it for something else. Interesting that Tusk is also a rust bucket in zone 8!

o no no, use it, it works in keeping it off, but with rust, once it shows up, really about all you can do...or IMO, is cut the leaves back. Its been awhile since I read the directions, but I thought I remember them even saying you really need to give it two weeks and keep up the spraying. I say it works at least as well as a pesticide.....and its safe.

I used Actinovate on my rusty daylilies in May and again last month, and have seen no new rust on them, or the Cannas or the plumeria or the fig tree! This stuff is a bit pricey but it really works. It's a biologic, and actually feeds off the fungus.

The score's not in yet on whether it can keep the black rot fungus at bay on the orchids, but even just for the rust, it's worth it to me.

A few years ago I imported rust Rolling on the floor laughing which showed up late summer to fall with plants from the south. I wouldn't toss a plant in my zone because of rust due to upcoming winter kill. Isolation is the key before planting in the garden.

This Spring and Summer I've seen minimal rust in my garden areas. I think this is the least amount of rust ever that I've seen for this time of year. Go figure! But of course, Fall is usually when I see the most rust during any given year. I am hoping I am winning my war of rust as each year passes.
