That is my new camera! It's a Panasonic Lumix. Glad you liked the virtual tour. I can't wait to go crazy at MOSI with my camera this weekend!

I haven't seen a Hairstreak in a while. I miss them. Good to see Monarch cats!

I like your little Cabbage White, Jim. Those and sulphurs are SO hard to photograph because they won't hold still!
Melanie, I've looked at that Tussock moth photo three times. Are they good guys? What do they eat?

Jim, I'll try to send butterflies your way!

Oh, Tussock Moths. Sighing! As far as I know, they eat oaks because they fall out of the oak trees and then wander around spinning their cocoons on everything. They can cause dermatitis in some people so they are generally considered "bad". Several years back, it got to the point where we had so many it was like a plague. I actually sprayed BT very cautiously around the oaks - in the lower limbs and in the grass around them where the caterpillars fall. I also went on a rampage with a stick and my shoe. That knocked back their numbers by a lot, but they can still be a pest.

Here's a good page from UF talking all about Tussock Moths. The ones I see are the Fir Tussock Moths, although I have had the White Marked Tussock Moths in the past. http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/crea...

I realized I better feed the Pipevine cats one more time before it gets dark so I went out to pick some leaves. I realized I left my camera inside so I did my best imitation of a horse with blinders on. Just walk straight to the pipevine, don't look at anything else! But I had a couple of surprises on the pipevine! First, I found a cat that was probably third instar. He's about the same size as the smaller cats I have in the big tank. So I added him to them. Then, low down on the plant, I saw a much smaller caterpillar. I could see that he had molted, but I wasn't sure he was okay. I nudged him with my fingernail and he moved around so I brought him in, too.

I decided to put the little guy with the eggs and cat I found earlier today. Most caterpillars are fine cohabitating, but I like to keep them separated by size for convenience. So as I opened the container, I saw that all three Pipevine cats have now hatched!

As for the little guy I found, you can see his old head capsule on the left and his shed skin on the right. When he's ready, he'll turn around and eat the shed skin.

I'm currently laughing at my tank of the larger Pipevine cats. Pipevine and Polydamas Swallowtail cats love eating the stem of the plant. So much so, that the Polydamas were chewing the stems and letting all the leaves fall to the ground which is a massive waste of food. That's just one reason I raise them inside. When I pick leaves, I try to get as much stem as I can. It's just funny to see the caterpillars go into attack mode and start chewing it right away. Must be meatier and more nutritious than the leaf. Here's a couple shots I took of one earlier. It's kind of dark because I was sitting in the kitchen.

Awesome, Melanie. The Polydamas Swallowtail cats must have huge appetites. Hilarious!

Thank you, Ann for the info about Asimina parviflora. Thumbs up

You are so right, Jimard, it's early there. We will probably be sitting back soon, watching your springtime show!!

There are two caterpillars that always need fed when I go to MOSI - Monarchs and Polydamas. They are monsters. So if you've ever raised Monarchs, that's about how much Polydamas eat. And they tend to have a great survival rate in captivity so you need LOTS of Pipevine.

I posted some of my better photos on Facebook and the parents think the quality is definitely better. Mom was partial to the hatching caterpillars while Dad liked the Tussock Moth. He confirmed that I killed it after I took the photo, though. He and my brother are the one who have to get the pressure washer out and clear their cocoons from the house, the shed, the travel trailer, etc. Glad that's not my job.

About to leave for the movies, but real quickly...

Pipevine caterpillars in a group preparing to molt. Not sure why they like to do this in groups, but I've seen lots of other species do it, too.

Thumb of 2016-04-15/mellielong/a93edc

And remember how I said they like stem? This is them a few minutes after giving them fresh food this morning. Obviously, these are not the ones in the process of molting.

It sure looks possible Charlotte. Maybe Melanie can say for sure. I saw 1 on BAMONA that was that overall red color but it was only a side view.

That's what it looks like to me too! In my area, the more reddish ones used to be more common than they have been since the drought.

Melanie, I think your paw paw is Asimina reticulata. It came down to longifolia or reticulata. Longifolia seems to have narrower leaves. Longifolia has a more leathery looking leaf - reminiscent of aged oleander leaves during drought.

Pretty in both forms. I wonder if the larva is gut purging? See that drip?

Just woke up so real quick notes. I'm actually going to go out and plant some of the many plants I've bought over the last two weeks and I better get out before it's gets too hot.

Pipevine caterpillars do have a red form and I hear it's much more common in Texas so yes, that's exactly right!

Ann, gut purging comes out the other end. Hilarious! But what it is doing is classic defensive behavior. It's regurgitating or, as I say, throwing up. Sulphurs and Whites are notoriously bad for doing this when handled. Just another part of my glamorous life as a volunteer at MOSI!

I'm off to feed me, feed the caterpillars, and get some work done. And hopefully get some awesome photos in the process! I also got a great night's sleep so I'm ready to get stuff done! Bring it on!

Charlotte, they gut purge before they go into their chrysalis. I think I've got that right. If not, Melanie can straighten us out on that.
