You may have already heard of Barry Francis. He lives in North Dakota (USA) and has done a lot of work with crossing and in vitro embryo growing and embryo rescue. He told me once, partly joking and partly true, that he has no problem growing the seed indoors, but has a heck of a time growing the lilies outside. Hilarious!

It is true that the transition to the outdoors with seedlings can be tricky. I totally understand Barry's comments.

Indeed. There's at least two buds that I've been expecting to open for the last two days now and many others developing.

A few more have opened in the past couple of days. #5 in the garden bed seems to be a clone of #3 (yellow).

Garden bed #6. More trumpet-shaped and the first (and only so far) to have be scented. The first two photos show it yesterday morning it as it was starting to open; the last shows it fully open yesterday evening.

Garden bed #7. The first two buds opened this morning; there are still three more to go (probably next week). I restaked it this afternoon, so the first two photos show it prior to restaking. The last photo was several hours later once the sun had gone off the garden bed.

There are also three buds in the process of opening today that should be open tomorrow... stay tuned.

Very nice, Joshua. Are these also from Paul's breeding program?
Some of these do remind me a little of the OT lily 'Mister Pistache' that I have growing in my garden. They also need a good stake or two to hold them up.

Yes, these are all from Paul. Some of them have reasonable stems that almost don't lean at all, whilst two or three are very weak and bend over quite badly (to being horizontal) if not staked. The majority lean somewhat. Some I've staked just to keep the buds (and future blooms) from hitting each other, as the stems lean together.

More of Paul's hybrids...

Garden bed #8. Another trumpet. Intermittent, faint scent (whereas #6 is strongly scented). Really enjoy the colour on this one. The first photo is from the 16th, when it started to get some colour in the bud (and kept me waiting four days to see what it would be). It started opening yesterday (the 20th) and was fully open this morning.

Garden bed #9. Also started to open yesterday and was fully open this morning.
Thumb of 2016-12-21/Australis/3e2a9a Thumb of 2016-12-21/Australis/238834

Garden bed #10 and #11 appear to be the same clone. I enjoy the soft colour on this one and find it much nicer when in the sunlight. In the last photo you can see #10 (foreground) and #11 (on the left in the background).

Garden bed #12 and #13 might be the same clone, but I suspect they are not due to a different in the width of the tepals. First two photos are of #12; second two of of #13.

Finally, I've been waiting a few days to post photos of this one, as I've noticed how much the blooms vary (both as they age and between blooms). This is 'Rascal', an Asiatic Tonkin hybrid, and one of my favourites out of the Asiatics I've purchased this year.

Mid-morning on the day this bloom opened (approx. 10am on the the 18th):

Hi Della,

The stems for each of those (#3, #4, #7 and #12) were reasonable, but have all been staked. #4 and #12 (the two white and orange ones) probably had the best stems and might not have needed staking. #7 and #3 (the yellow) are harder to judge, as they were probably affected by the neighbouring stems (#3 in particular being overshadowed by its much taller neighbour).

I've got a few more photos from today that I hope to post a bit later this evening. Probably will be the last update for the next few days due to Christmas and family activities.

A few more similar-looking lilies (all different, I suspect) have opened yesterday and today. Blooms are all a bit smaller than #10 and #11.

Garden bed #14. Reasonable stem and bud count (about 8). Staked and a neighbouring one to prevent them leaning against each other.
Thumb of 2016-12-23/Australis/be8eed Thumb of 2016-12-23/Australis/ee3753

Garden bed #17. Required a bit more support than #14 and lower bud count (about 5 or 6) for the same height stem.
Thumb of 2016-12-23/Australis/b9cf16 Thumb of 2016-12-23/Australis/3d3d53

Garden bed #19. Highest bud count of all three (about 9). Not staked but does lean slightly.
Thumb of 2016-12-23/Australis/46fbe4 Thumb of 2016-12-23/Australis/8a543f

One of the others that opened this morning is double-nosed, with one bud on each stem. The stems are quite weak and lean over to the point of being horizontal (whilst none of its neighbours lean that much) and had to be staked. Won't be keeping this one because of the stem.

Garden bed #15.
Thumb of 2016-12-23/Australis/b62ca6

The last two are also quite similar (similar height, similar bud count, etc.). Both staked as they lean somewhat.

Garden bed #16.

I especially like the second one, Della. Very nice!

'Royal Respect' opened this morning:

Bought this as 'Lanzarote', but currently think it's 'Red Velvet' (second photo is from 5 days ago, before it opened, as it's the best shot of the stem I have). Found out later that the supplier is actually a subsidiary of the vendor from which I got 'Corsica' (virused) and 'Sancerre'. All three were not what they were supposed to be. They were roughly in the right ballpark colour-wise, but that's it. Will not be buying from them again...
Thumb of 2016-12-26/Australis/1a0c28 Thumb of 2016-12-26/Australis/0f8a27

Finally, some photos of 'Deliana'. This one opens as a yellow but fades pretty quickly (i.e. over the following two days) to a pale cream/off white.
Thumb of 2016-12-26/Australis/5eae70

Should have more photos of Paul's hybrids later as well.

Merry Christmas all.
