It was new, but last year 'Orange You Clever' gave me some fireworks that really pleased me. Those scapes were nothing like what it's showing me this year! More potential severe weather for my area in the forecast over the next few days. If I hadn't put it in a wine barrel size container, I'd be tempted to set it on the buggy to bring inside if necessary. I'd really like to see that show. I'm tempted anyway. I built in some handles for the container, but my back can do a lot of complaining and when it's had enough, well.....I get some enforced down time Thumbs down .

You know Donald .... I'd be looking at all kinds of containers to use for cover, such as tall and large boxes, large trashcans, etc. to cover those plants in case of hail. That would be a total bummer to lose all those scapes to a pounding hail storm. Any chance of creating a temporary hoop house over them that you could cover with tarp or something. Hoop structures could be created using 1/2" pvc tubing/pipes and plastic clips or spring clips:

And video how to make a really cheap one:

I have too many containers and too many plants with scapes to attempt to cover them. Also, it would be too easy to make things worse considering those systems always have high winds with them. The system 2-3 counties over from me and headed generally in my direction had baseball size hail and 70mph winds. It's a nasty cloud. I'm trying to keep a watch on the movement, but there's only so much you can do. Just hope for the best, I guess. The watch is in effect until 11p.m. and I think the movement hasn't quite followed what they expected which is probably just an indication of how unstable the whole thing is.

Well, it missed me again. There was a thin sliver between two nasty cells that was only rain. I was in that sliver, so I only got rain - no hail or high wind. I feel bad for the folks who got pounded, but my luck held again.

Donald, you are blessed! We got a hail storm a couple of weeks ago and my plants were shredded. I lost buds on quite a few plants. I can't image what damage golf ball size hail could do. I've had to cut those shredded leaves and hope I get new scapes later in the season. The storm lasted only for twenty minutes, but the damage might last a season. My fruit trees suffered as well...more plums and peaches on the ground than what was left on the trees.

Yes, I have been very fortunate this year. I hope it lasts. Hail can be horribly damaging to plants, property and animals. My uncle used to have a peach orchard and it got a hail storm so bad it stripped all the bark off the trees. They died except for a few that put out sucker growth, but since it was all grafted stock those that suckered were pulled out along with all the other stumps. For years you could still see the dead growth in the tops of the oaks trees where the bark had been peeled away.

Wow, I had no idea hail could cause so much damage. This is the first time it has hailed at my house in forever. This really caused a set back for my plants. I'm getting paranoid whenever it rains now.

LOL @Pat236
I stay paranoid this time of year. Really on into the summer. I only wish hail storms were more rare than they are. But, yes, they can wipe out a whole year of work and anticipation in a few minutes. They come in a wide range of damage depending on the size of the stones, how heavy the rain of stones is, and the duration of the event. A thick rain of small, nickel sized stones lasting for 5-10 minutes can do more damage than a few half-dollar sized stones falling here and there and then over with in seconds. I've seen way too many of any kind for my liking. I really hate hail.

Me too...I was anticipating slugs, aphids, leaf streak, and even some rust, but not hail damage!
