Again and again loves it here. It was divided, cut, and transplanted and I'm still getting this...

Circus Stripes is stunning. It is my absolute favorite along with Devil May Care and Squid Squirt (it's impossible to pick just one)

We've grown October Sun for many years...over ten...and it ALWAYS has put up rebloom stalks, and they ALWAYS have gotten frozen out before a flower could open. This must be the "miracle year", as the Cubbies won, and October Sun bloomed;

Question for the experts...

If I have a bud forming on an iris I planted in the spring, is it necessary to cut it, or can I enjoy the bloom and still expect a healthy plant next season?

I've noticed a lot of other people in this forum who cut their blooms and are upset when their iris blooms in the fall, as though that is a death sentence for the flower. Is that the case? Sad I have a beautiful (sounds beautiful from the description, anyway!) 2015 Black intro that doesn't even have a picture on the site I purchased it from, so I'm eager to see what it looks like; but I don't want my plant to perish.

If I do have to cut it down, I will atleast get a picture of the bud later today. When I saw it day before yesterday, parts of the petals we visible and they were quite fitting to the hybridizer's name!... Very black, indeed, from the looks of it!

I think one of the more knowledgeable irisarians just answered a similar question elsewhere on the forum? As I recall, the advice was that if the stalk, not to mention the flower, had already developed, there was no point in cutting it off, as the rhizome had already spend its energy on producing it.

If I were you I would just enjoy the bloom! Hurray!
Of course I talk to myself; sometimes I need expert advice!

Lilli, thank you for passing along the advice! I didn't see that post, but I'm glad you did because I was really on the fencepost.

I suppose it I DO let it grow out and it fails to thrive, I could buy it again. $9 for the chance to enjoy a bloom this late in the season... I would suppose that might be worth it.... Shrug! nodding

I struggled with that question too, but decided to let it bloom, as mine has a few nice increases coming. Most likely it won't bloom next year anyway so I'd let it grow and protect it from frost if need be. Either way it should still live.

DND, a good many of the Blyths that arrived with me in late April bloomed over the summer, just weeks after they were planted. Barry emailed me to say that was absolutely fine, and assured me that most would still bloom next spring -- and they are certainly putting on the increases. So I don't think you need to worry about autumn blooms.

I did, after consulting people in this forum, cut off several seed pods that started forming after the blooms... I figured that (1) they were bee pods and (2) I'd rather the energy went into making increases.

I do sometimes have iris buds in the autumn that don't manage to develop into blooms because of frost - but that's another story!
