The incomplete post is gone, Khalid. Smiling I also don't care for the fragrance of Mary Rose and some of the other Austins. It reminds me of my youth, when everyone used Pond's Cold Cream on their faces as a moisturizer and makeup remover. It was a cloying scent.

I agree that location, climate, growing conditions in general, the identity of the particular rose, and the gardener's own practices have so much bearing on various features of rose gardening. That's why we've never included disease and pest resistance in our database. Some of the supposedly disease-resistant roses will be black spot or rust magnets in certain locations. People in cooler climates swear by Buck's roses, for example, but in my garden they are vulnerable to every type of disease and often are the most unsightly rose bushes in a bed.

Black Prince is an absolute treasure! I love the deep red roses.

Some of my new roses are in full, blazing sun where I'm seeing some damage to blooms since the weather has turned hot.

Garden Delight doesn't drop its petals as the blooms fade, they dry still attached.
Thumb of 2016-06-15/gemini_sage/e8ad73

Red Riding Hood blooms on the west side of the plant are drying at the petal edges, but look better on the other side.

How beautiful Mika! I'd love to sit under that gazebo! I also love how the gazebo metal is green and hard to differentiate from the rose canes, it looks like the structure is made of roses.

Thanks, Neal. The perfume when you sit inside is intoxicating.

Love your characterful Grimm Brothers Lovey dubby Can you move the others to a cooler spot? They're certainly pretty. We grow some of our roses in France in semi shade, with only morning or late afternoon sun.

I'm considering adding something taller behind the roses that will eventually shade them somewhat from the setting sun. It wouldn't bother me a bit to see a small blooming tree out there. Big Grin Isn't it nice when the solution to a problem is adding more flowers! Hilarious! With Garden Delight I think it is more the habit of the plant to hold on to aging flowers. I've removed the dried blooms and it looks fine now, but wanted to show that tendency in a photo- it demonstrates that while it is hardy and vigorous, it wouldn't be a good landscape plant where self cleaning plants that shed petals cleanly are preferred.

Out of Rosenheim is in that bed too, and is a little brighter red than Red Riding Hood. It is holding better in the sun, but does fade to almost white in spots near the end of the bloom. That actually is looking pretty to me, I do enjoy color changing blooms.

I forgot to mention that Brothers Grimm seems to have better overall bloom quality when opening in heat. The blooms have a nicer form than those that opened earlier, and seem to have better substance. We were getting lots of rain earlier, so that may have had more to do with it.

Mika: That's a fabulous gazebo. Would love to sit inside and... just keep sitting there Smiling

Neal: Your Red Riding Hood and Brothers Grimm look fantastic. So many blooms. BTW, what do you do with the petals of old blooms like those on Garden Delight? I make sure that they go back to the same bed or pot where they come. Rose petals have a very appropriate NPK for roses, equal nitrogen and potassium and less phosphorus, along with many vitamins. They decompose quickly.

Taqiyyah, you are welcome. I will open a new thread for the pics of my roses in June when temperatures in Islamabad range between 104 to 115*F. It's a hard time for roses and the blooms are not at their best. However, it might interest few members to see photos of blooms in such high heat though might not be so pleasing to the eyes.

best regards

Thank you Khalid! I typically just drop the petals right there around the plant, good to know they are giving back to the plant Thumbs up

I like seeing photos of rose plants that are less than perfect or are struggling with various issues. It is educational and helpful for members dealing with similar climactic conditions looking for roses.

Mika,

I love your Rose covered arbor and I am fascinated with the cupped flower form. Someday I wish to move to a warmer climate zone and grow huge climbing roses.

Mika - just love your NOID's. That Pink Climber is absolutely stunning!!!

You also having so much rain??? Us to!!! Can't get out into the garden to do much at the moment! It is very frustrating because it is hybridizing season! I need to get all my crosses done by the end of the month otherwise the hips won't ripen. The other frustrating thing is that the roses are very late this year. That frost we had in May did quite a bit of damage! Grumbling

Thanks, Porkpal - that would be really nice, but even without names I'm happy with them. There's another white one that I think it might be possible to name, because it has a distinctive green eye. I'll take a photo tomorrow (weather permitting).

Thanks, Sharlene. We did have one sunny day late last week, but since then yes, we've had rain interspersed with heavy rain... Sighing!

@kbw664,

Julia child is usually buttery yellow when the buds open and they turn pale yellow after a few days. This particular flower is at least 4days old and hence the pale color. Smells like a blend of fruits and spices. Since the bush only grows about 3ft, hard to notice the fragrance unless you bring the flowers inside as cut flowers. Its a really wonderful rose, instead of blooming in flushes, it usually blooms non stop through out the season. I will try to get more pictures when I have newer blooms to show the true color.

Shravani Ch, thanks for the details. Blooms of my Julia Child usually stay towards the yellow side though one odd blooms is of lighter shade. It's a wonderful rose I agree. Mine has kind of a licorice scent.
