I noticed today the hummers on the red lilies here too and also seen them on one of the outfacing trumpet that is blooming right now.......
so might use quite a variety of the lilies
and Lilium auratum is supposed to attract many of them they say......so will see how that goes once they open and not for a long time yet here though

the one on Henri is pretty amazing pic really. The wings are tucked in the side and it is not fluttering at the flower......so somehow it is staying still.........not seen that in any pic of them on flowers before...good photos.....

you are so lucky to get hummingbirds.... we dont here in cool wet uk...

we do get hawk moths though like the ones in the pic up the thread. maybe theres a difference between countries but our hummingbird hawk moths are a specie in itself, hawk moths being the genus.

Rob, I am delighted to have the smaller hummingbirds (metallic green / males have a metallic-red 'wig') all year round, thanks to my Abutilons that bloom the whole year. The large hummingbirds however (2.5 t 3 times larger than the previous ones) over winter in the Juan Fernandez islands (Robinson Crusoe) and come back in spring.

This week we had a very sunny day, that allowed me to sit on my deck and watch at least for an hour the app. 10 hummingbirds that had a battle for the Abutilon flowers. They are quite feisty and loud! (But still lovely to watch!).

even if the hummingbird is perching which is on second look.........the shot is still amazing of the bird and flower.......

I notice today that they seem to be hovering around here more and more ...........it seems the more the orange comes out the more they do too as well. I have seen them literally sit on the flower petals for a bit to relax.

We get ruby throated ones here and you see them only in the summer. I put up artificial feeders to see if I can attract them early in the spring and it works but once the flowers are out and especially the lilies they no longer use the feeders much. I have put a feeder right near the plants and that did not help to get them to use the feeder. Something to say about mother nature that does it best......

If you get a number of them they will get into quite a Arial display for territory and chase each other off.......

they are beautiful and fast.........

Yes it is, Della.

I do not watch war movies, but they seem to fly like the suicide squad to defend 'their' Abutilon.

I ripped out my gardens and redid them this year (all raised beds now) so the few plants I have that attract hummers are still getting established (more will be added this next spring). I have feeders out to attract them though.

I found this tip and it has worked well for me:
Cut strips of the yellow tape construction companies use ("crime scene" tape) and attach it to the pole holding the feeder to attract Hummingbirds (like the streamers kids used to have on their bicycle handles). The fluttering grabs the bird's attention. Since these little guys like red I decided to use the cheap plastic "flags" Lowes, Home Depot, & lumber yards provide for boards that stick out past the end of vehicles. I cut them about 1/2" wide (width is not critical) and taped several together with blue painter's tape (that tape stands up well the rain!), and have 3 or 4 "sets" of these streamers on the pole. I did the same thing for a feeder at my parents' house and now my Dad says he has to refill the feeder every couple days because of all their little visitors.

Hopefully by spring the garden will be ready for "drive thru" service, but I'll probably still keep the feeders out.
