My seedling is Heal Thy Spirit x Crocodile Smile. It's just a bundle of energy! I crossed it last year with Heman and got some interesting plants. This year I'm crossing it with Bass Gibson and other toothy daylilies.

I have it "fenced in" because its in my sidewalk garden and sometimes doggies tend to wander in the garden when their humans are taking them for a walk.

Carry on with those crosses, Sandi. Hopefully the "bundle of energy" trait will carry on!

Sandi - Your seedling is lovely and so lush in foliage and blooms! Are you going to register it? (You should.)

Thank You! to all who like the crosses I have made. There are seven pods left and I will post them as they are planted, for I'm not sure about some of those with Willow Dean Smith as pollen parent. Willow Dean seems to be a little bit difficult both ways, but maybe I'm just not doing something right. There are three pods left with WDS as pollen parent and the pods look as if they want to dry out, so we'll see.

Are you talking about the "pods" drying out or the seeds?

Pods should dry out and start to turn brown. Seeds can also dry and shrivel up, but are often still viable. Doing a gentle squish test will determine whether your seeds are possibly viable or not can help determine that. If you place the seed between your thumb and pointer finger and gently apply pressure to squish the seed .... to see if it is hard or will easily flatten. You don't want to apply to much pressure as you could squeeze and flatten a perfectly viable seed. But an empty seed shell will easily flatten if it is not a viable seed.

Becky, the pod on the WDS/Electric Mist cross just seemed to shrivel up as it turned brown. I thought it was dead, but it had cracked just a bit and I could see a seed, so I took it off--the pod was soft, not hard like I usually expect to see. I was surprised to see those big fat five seeds when I opened it up. The same thing happened with the WDS/Katherine Caldwell cross, only there were just the two seeds, but they were huge, so I think the seeds are viable. Naturally, if they sprout, I will post it.

Sometimes the seed pods go soft. As long as the black seeds inside are hard, you probably have viable seeds! Thumbs up I always open the pods no matter how bad they look or feel, cause you just never know if there are seeds hiding in there. Smiling

Seedling number ten with a new bloom this morning. I have never seen a bloom with so much edging material...chicken fat, pie crusting, etc. This is really extreme edging. The petals are turned back some so the photo does a poor job of showing the excess material on the edges.

The ones I've tried with edging like this haven't worked out too well for me here. They look good in a photo, but in real time the edges really do look nasty - like the chicken fat description. I think the thickness of the edges melt in the heat and sun I have for my growing conditions. They have tended to lose firmness early and then deteriorate as the day progresses. Is that something others have observed? I don't generally have cool temps to compare how they might fare in those circumstances.

Well, sometimes I think things can be too much. In this hot weather the blooms have opened up nicely, but I wonder how they would open in cooler weather, and the edging is not consistent, globs of extra material in spots and not so much in other spots, also the shape of the bloom is not symmetrical . I am hoping the blooms will improve, but it is very interesting to look at, can't say it is all that attractive to me.
