Two words Bill ..... PLEASE STOP ! ! ! ! Drooling

I am so out of room for caladium that I have pots in the pots! The neighbors are starting to think that I'm a caladium grower. (If only...)

As the growing season winds down, I'm going to try to separate them all by color and put them up individually for the winter. It's going to be a lengthy task.

Not having a ton of experience (yet), will any bulbs that are just sprouting now be about the same size come fall? Or, will they be smaller?

I was wondering the same... thinking that here they'd sprout and grow some leaves but not have enough time to replenish the bulb by fall, so there would not be much use trying to save them or next year.

Bill, could the bulbs be stored dormant and cool from now until spring, or do they need to be planted this season?

Remember, they make nice houseplants! I'm going to try some that way this fall -- in hanging baskets because I have a voracious plant-eating cat.

@RickM.... Sorry, I created another caladium addict...lol... Hurray!

Plant the bulbs as soon as you can and let them go for as long as you can!! You'll be able to enjoy there color for a little while anyway!!
Do Not try to just save the bulbs you're buying now thinking you can store them until next Spring. It's NOT going to work!! Grumbling
The bulbs are going to dry out on you!! Angry

When you lift these bulbs in the fall the bulbs are going to be about the same size if not "a hair" bigger

Oh me oh my oh, got my box yesterday and that's a lot of beautiful bulbs to plant. It's been dry here and I ran a sprinkler for 3 hours on the bed where I plan to mass these Caladiums. After that time the moisture had only penetrated about 1", below that my heavy soil is dry like concrete. It is a well amended bed but even compost turns rock hard when it is so very dry. I have huge trees and they take up all the moisture leaving the surface dry. Guess I'll run the sprinkler again this morning for a few hours and hope for a few more workable inches. Sighing! I get a good deal on bulbs and spend big bucks on water, there is no justice in this world.

Alice, maybe use pots instead. We have clay soil here and lots of rock. I joke that we can't plant a crocus bulb without hitting rock, but it isn't really a joke. I've taken to growing my caladium in pots of various sizes. Not only are they easier to water, but we're free to move them around for different color effects depending on the mood.

I grow most of mine in containers here in Florida and they do great! Fortunately for me, I don't have freezing, snowy Winters so I don't have to dig them up and store them when Fall/Winter arrives. (IF it even does here in central Florida.)

I have so many that I am putting them in containers everywhere. Mine are smaller caladiums (Florida Sweetheart), so tucking them in various pots will (hopefully) add a bit of charm.

Thanks again, Bill! Love them! Thank You! Lovey dubby Thumbs up

I find keeping containers watered is a huge job. They dry out so quickly and yes, I understand about porous containers vs. no porous. I use large containers and they still have to be watered daily during the summer and water costs a small fortune here. No personal wells allowed. I use as much drip irrigation as possible and incorporate many xeric plants but I am still paying several hundred dollars a month. Do I buy more plants or more water????? Silly question, plants always win, hands down. Whistling

Im culling most of my daylilies this year, they just require way to much water, and Im not willing to tack on an extra 200 at least, for the daylilies, any more. Im putting the little caladium bulbs in pots, leave them on patio, so maybe they have a chance against the squirrels. The bigger ones are going in the ground Crossing Fingers!

Sorry you guys are having water problems my water is cheap but poor quality i use a lot of water. 95% of my plants are in pots and yes it takes a lot of time to water every day i can't stand to see a plant withered up.

I ran the little sprinkler for several more hours and I put a tall straight sided container out there today to measure how much was going down. It was 9" today and I finally got the top 3" damp enough to plant the caladiums then I watered well again to settle the bulbs. I don't want to see the bill this month. Charles, when we lived in Columbia our water cost a tiny fraction of what we pay down here. It is ridiculous.

If we have caladiums in pots can we leave them planted and just put the pots in the basement?

Just got my bulbs a few minutes ago, and there must have been over a hundred bulbs in the box. We got a lot of rain last night the temps are still hot and the caladiums should grow fast.
The box was full of assorted bulbs.

Still sprinkling rain, I will be off to plant shortly.
