That Buvard sure is a pretty iris!

Teresa - pine needles are pretty acidic. Makes Japanese Iris happy but not the best for bearded iris.

I'm obsessed with Buvard!!! I don't think it's being offered on the Cayeux website this year.

We use pine needles for new plants. Blow them off in the spring. it is a very nice mulch. Leslie is right, they can stay on JI & Siberians.

Lovey dubby Drooling Buvard just went on my want list.
My Iris from a friend with a wonky rhizome and almost no roots is acting dead. It's mother with no roots is still firm, but I will have to wait and see if that small section puts out any increase. Both were really small. I need to take a picture of Velvet Valentine soon. That one is giving me the finger.

No I don't use pine mulch around any Iris. Only around my berry plants. It's to acidic for the Iris. All my Japanese Iris are in large ceramic pots and the dirt contains pine fines but still don't use pine mulch there.

Thank You! all! Hope to be able to share good news of 'Buvard' next spring! Crossing Fingers!

No, it wasn't available on the Cayeux website this year - hope that means they sold out and not that it's a poor grower...
Of course I talk to myself; sometimes I need expert advice!

Hey, Lilli, could this be the basis of a swap?

Absolutely! If it ever decides to start growing, you're first on the list!
I'll put it in the notes on my list, but I might need reminding...

Question 1: The first two pics show two 5 gal. pots with seedlings from cross of That's All Folks x Coffee Shop.
There are a total of 8 seedlings from this cross between the two pots.
Should I separate them all into separate pots? It looks to me like the central seedling in each pot should probably stay
where it is (?) One of the seedlings is showing increases! Is now the time to code the crosses?

In comparison, I crossed Care to Dance with Rio Rojo at the same time as the TAF and CS. I think the difference is remarkable.
Although, to be fair, the Care to Dance seeds weren't quite ripe - were whitish. I'm watching to see if this puny seedling goes anywhere.
I loved both the parents.

This is exciting, Jan! Pics? And what does 'code the crosses' mean? Confused

I was a little late with the pics!
As I understand it, Mika, each cross that results in several or many seeds,
can produce different-looking seedlings. It's important to identify each seedling
to choose the best ones to save. This requires something that I think is called "lining out".
You give the individual seedlings names and numbers (which I keep in a notebook).
I'm doing all of this, due to physical limitations (mine), on my deck, in containers.

About potting soil ,Rob - We get whatever they're selling at the local farm and feed - organic. I think we were using Happy Frog.
Being in the "Emerald Triangle" we have lots of choices! Hilarious!

I'm thinking of buying half a truckload of potting soil!
