Good job on the ID, Ceci. I thought they were both the same butterfly, one open and one with wings closed.

Wow, Mariposa aquiles is so beautiful! Lovey dubby

Sorry - no pic. Camera broke. Grumbling

I have searched high and low with search engines to no avail.

Smallish butterfly approximately 1 inch across.

Orangish/Brown

What is very distinctive is it has a set of wings that are held flat. Then it has another set of wings above that set and the second set sweep at a 45 degree angle. Looks like a jet fighter design.

Any ideas?

On my evening walk I saw dozens of them. 3 were sitting next to each other on a Butterfly Bush and looked light a fighter squadron. I have observed many of them for the past month plus.

Dang Kurt you are good! I looked for Ceci's Banded Orange today until I was blue in the face & couldn't find a match.

I too thought both were the same butterfly. Top side & underside photos. *Blush* *Blush*

Cool link Jim.

J I hope your wrist/arm is healing well & you are getting more range of motion.

Cheryl are you walking pretty good now?

Everybody, stop getting hurt! I'm going to try my best not to contract the Zika virus.

I had a little fighter jet Skipper myself, yesterday. A lot of the time, they hold their wings together, but when they bask, they open them up to absorb the sunlight. So I guess they're solar-powered fighter jets!

I also released another Black Swallowtail. I laid down to take a nap yesterday about 1pm when I heard something fall. It was this guy falling from whatever he had perched on. His wings were extended, but not dried. I keep dead sticks in the critter keeper for this very reason. Since I was super comfortable, I muttered, "Get on the stick. Get on the stick!" It took a few seconds, but he did, and you can see he came out just fine. Flew away and everything.

I need to catch up on my backlog of photos, but for now, just know that I got egg bombed by a Sulphur. And then it happened again. I don't even know how many I have. But here are some I found yesterday with an egg to boot! I circled the egg in purple and the two cats in red so you can see them.

So today I came home from the movies ("Star Trek Beyond") and there was a Gray Hairstreak on my porterweed! I don't see Hairstreaks as often as I'd like.

I don't know what plant this Spicebush ST has been in, but can you see the pollen (mostly on the upper left wing)? I wish I had Dr. Doolittle powers so I could ask what she's been pollinating Hilarious!

This looks like a Monk Skipper but it's a little on the small side. I've had small ones before, though.

So I've also been getting egg bombed on my Pipevine. Mostly by Pipevine STs, but also Polydamas. Or in this case, both. Rolling my eyes. Seriously, this is nuts. I was shaking my head out there like, "Crazy butterflies!" The yellowish eggs are Polydamas, the reddish-orange are Pipevine.

Thumb of 2016-08-06/mellielong/509705

And here's some more Pipevine eggs and a caterpillar I found.

Ewww that's not a pretty mind picture. Carpal Tunnel or what? Time to hire the neighborhood kids for a little extra help!

Yes Cheryl - carpel tunnel for the 1st 2 fingers and the same thing for the ring and little finger (though that condition has another name), all compounded by arthritis in the thumb.

Jack, I can sort of sympathize. My Dad has a genetic condition called Dupuytren's Contracture and he's had six surgeries - three on each hand. That's over a period of probably fifteen years, though. Just chill and take it easy for the next few weeks. It's too hot to be doing anything useful, anyway.

Also, take advantage of all the physical therapy your time, budget and medical plan will allow. Physical therapists are the great healers of the world, jmho. Then keep on doing the exercise protocols they give you, forever!

I have ongoing foot problems, too and the only gains I've made were from an exercise protocol given to me by a friend who stayed with me for a month a couple of years ago. She's a PT and absolutely terrorized me into doing this little series of exercises every day until I was convinced - I do the whole series to this day and really notice it if I stop for a vacation or other (bad) excuse.

You'll only gain back your full function and strength if you rehab yourself.
