Thread OP

I have been checking out numerous daylilies on the daylily database and have noticed some real differences in images for the same named daylily. Wondering just how accurate these images are and why there are some that look so different from each other .

Just as an example are the images for "Tangled Web " daylily.

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Tangled Web')

Even taking into account the differences in soil and weather in different parts of the country , three of the images look similar but the other 3 look nothing like the other 3 . Does anyone verify the images on the database or is it more a case of anyone can post any image in the database.

Just a curiousity question . I don't particularly want to use inaccurate images to compare to the plants I have here . That just makes for mass confusion .

Thanks to anyone who can contribute some input into this

I thought someone verified photos before they are added to the database, that said the last photo of Tangled Web most certainly looks like a different cultivar.

Personally I will take a look at the database here also the AHS database and the hybridizers website for the most accurate picture of a cultivar.
When I post a picture of a cultivar it will be from an established clump and show the color that is accurate for my garden. I only post a few pictures not everything I take because some of them just plain do not look decent and do not reflect the look of the daylily to my eye. Cameras also make a difference in how a color is captured for the picture. When looking at the database here pay attention who took the pictures, sometimes lots of people have posted and other times it will be one or two people to help guide you in making decisions. Hope this helps.
If you want to be happy for a lifetime plant a garden!

I removed the last one that was clearly wrong, Joy added that one as well as the others with permission from various vendor's sites (hover your mouse over the thumbnails to see the caption or enlarge them) and as often happens, they contain mistagged plants. In my opinion, the other 5 are all correct, you can clearly see the midrib markings along the petals. As you mentioned, soil and weather play a large part in how a plant blooms. I find that warmer more humid night time locations produce more curved and swirl, pinched, etc. on spider or unusual form daylilies, often enhancing other features, like the throat patterns. In cooler night areas such as where I live, they often produce a more stiff form as pictured by the last image.

After a new member posts their first 10 images, all images are automatically approved and go straight into the database. I try to scan new images to see if they are correct but I don't always catch everything, I do have a life outside of NGA nodding (as of this posting, we have 113,622 images of 82,870 daylilies listed!) So it also falls on all our members to help catch any errors .
If you ever see something that is questionable, just enlarge that image and scroll down to post a comment. It will then start a thread in the Photos Forum and will be seen by the image submitter and admin regularly scans that forum. You can also tag a certain admin member to bring their attention to that thread. I am the moderator for the daylily database so you can contact me anytime. Thumbs up

I have seen several pics in the database that I think are wrong, I just ignore them. You can also google a plant's name and see images on other sites. Usually between all the pics here and there you can get a reliable ideas of what it is. Some people get offended when it is pointed out that a photo is not correct, so I just stay out of that... you have to use your own judgement on whether you think a photo is correct. The time of day, weather, camera, monitor you are seeing it on, soil differences, maturity of the plant all make a difference in the appearance of a bloom. Sometime first yr blooms can look quite different than it will once the plant matures.

You are correct, @Frillylily. I don't know much about daylilies but I do know plumeria. When someone wants to register a name and/or a plant with the Plumeria Society of America, the registration format states that one should NOT send photos of that particular plant/flowers until the third year of blooming and the photographs' protocols are very specific. I can assure you that time of day, lighting, background, camera, and the maturity of the plant will greatly alter the photos. That is one reason that it is almost impossible to definitely ID a plumera simply from photographs.

Thread OP

To all, thanks so much for you input . I appreciate it . I do realize that people have a life outside of allthingsplants .....oops ....I mean Garden.org however proper id of any plant including images is paramount to keeping the right plant in circulation .

The biggest example of how mis-identification creates chaos that I have run into in the 10 plus years I have been growing daylilies is the Magic Dawn/Howdy fiasco . There are many more out there suffering the same fate. Seems everyone knows that Howdy is being sold as Magic Dawn and know it is not Magic Dawn but they continue to sell it as Magic Dawn . Even people that are members of the AHS are doing this . Does it matter that it is registered as a pink daylily ? and that Howdy is not pink ?
I'm afraid that proper id is one of the things I really care about as a daylily grower . A daylily or any other plant really is only as good as it's name . Otherwise , why bother to register a plant and spend money to do it, if someone is only going to misrepresent it and sell it as whatever suits them .
