Arlyn, I am just finding this thread. You have put in words what I have been thinking! Some folks just don't have proper manners.

I also had one lady order $40 worth of dls and was suppose to pick them up. She was sick ok, we are emailing for 2 wks. Ever time we set a time something came up. I finally said, these plants really need to be in the ground, do you want me to just replant them and she said yes. Wow! She is a good neighbor's daughter so I didn't say much just thought a lot.

She also said she would buy more at a later time. Angry I will be waiting until she gets her with a check/cash in hand before digging.

That is beyond bad manners, Teresa, that caused you work, used up your time and did damage to your valuable plants. Grumbling

I agree I would never order plants and then not follow thru with payment. She could have had someone pick them up for her. I know she has health problems, but she has a grandson that does work for her. Thankfully, most of my customers pay first Hurray!

That's the only way to do it, Teresa. She actually did you a favor to reinforce that concept.

I just found this thread, too. Not sure how I missed it. Sticking tongue out

I had an iris stolen by a 9 y/o to give to his mother. I've told this before so I won't tell it again.

All I can add to this is, common sense is like a muscle. If it isn't used, it withers away. Etiquette can be taught and learned if done gently. In this 'me me me' era, that can be a challenge. But who more than Iris Folk are up to that challenge?! Thumbs up Lovey dubby

I love you people. You're the best!

Just gross!!!! Your self control is superhuman, but I tell you people do not understand that plants can't just sit there waiting for you to come like they were widgets. AAAAAArgh!

Hello Greg!
I'll be sure to try to visit your garden, come this Spring. Makes it a lot easier if I'm already acquainted with the grower!

Speaking of etiquette, yesterday I had friends visiting, and in drives a couple of ladies who traveled about 40 miles to buy irises. They just showed up unannounced. I explained to them that I had company and I wasn't able to dig irises. Could they come back another time. They said they had traveled a long way. I said I was sorry that they didn't call ahead and make an appointment like it asked them to in the ad, but that I was not about to ignore my guests for a half hour or so while I changed clothes and dug irises for them, but they were welcome to set up another time. I really felt bad about it. The said they would call another time, we'll see. Glare A few days before a guy e-mailed me with a list of irises he wanted. We set a time and date for him to pick them up. I had them all dug and ready for pickup. He showed up at the time he said he would be here, we had a nice conversation as he had lots of questions about irises. I told him about NGA and he was interested in visiting. Might find him on here some day. Some people just have their act together, and some don't. Smiling

Good morning, Tom. I think many people don't understand the concept of private garden. We are not an open business. My selling started because my love of perennials. They multiply far quicker than I can take care of. Most folks understand that they need to call first but there is always some that don't!

Hopefully, the man that was asking question will become a member here. This website has helped me greatly. We all start somewhere and none can really know everything. Gardening is such a wonderful hobby/experience. I look forward to learning more and what the future holds. Hurray!

They learned an important lesson, Tom. I hope they put it to good use. How hard is it to be considerate of another person.................?

What if they said..."That's alright, go be with your company, we'll dig them up." Sticking tongue out

I knew someone (he recently passed away) whose wife had a lot of irises. When she passed away he got rid of all of them. After some time, he wanted some of her irises back so some people gathered some up for him. A man rang his door bell one day asking if he could have some irises. He said sure and that man dug up and took everything. Before he passed away I offered him irises, but he didn't want to garden anymore. I still grow some of her irises that she gave me 25+/- years ago.
