It seems like an end of an era. We have ordered from Bill for several years. It was just understood here that we would place at least one order each summer and usually three or more with them all shipped together in the fall. Our daylily club has ordered a few times taking advantage of the BOGO's. Where else can you find such great variety in beautiful daylilies at such great prices! Selling and shipping daylilies is work and very time consuming. We are happy for Bill and Marilyn that they will be taking the time to do those things that bring them much enjoyment. Sadly, we say "goodbye" in the business sense. We have had the honor of meeting Bill at three AHS meetings and hope to see him again.

Now, it is time to put together our third order for this summer, our final order. THANK YOU, Bill Maryott, for all the wonderful daylilies, your awesome business sense, the great customer service, and your dedication to the world of daylilies and the AHS.

Well I just joined up. Might have many years ago but due to family issues - gone for awhile.
I just placed an order from Maryott's and already received - I was amazed what great plants and the BONUSs was fabulous.
I am going to make an additional order before he's done.
I thought I would take a look around this forum and quit buying so many things off of the daylily.com but looks like everyone just keeps giving me more ideas.
I am WAY over my budget already but I am a true DAYLILY ADDICT.
Guess most people on here are.
Glad to be part of it.

Welcome! Ojenny!

It would be really helpful if you went to your profile and put in your location. You don't have to give the exact city, but do include your state, like north Ohio or South Florida or something similar. I, personally, just list my city and state. That way we will know your zone and climate.

You avatar bloom is lovely! What cultivar is it? Lovey dubby

Can I just say, if anyone is questioning whether they should order, I say go for it.

I have place 4 orders with Bill in the past 14 months. His plants are awesome!!! Of the first 2 shipments that arrived in July and August, I have scapes popping up all over the place. So far I have had Coralitos Rose, Lava Flow, Ever So Softly, Sharper Image and Citrix bloom. Oh also Heavenly United We Stand, Diana's Evening Gown, Halloween Costume and Bluegrass Memories.

I have at least another 6-8 scapes that have popped up this week alone. Many of mine did this with last year's shipment too.

I can say the same thing. I received an order late last September and the two favorites that I ordered both bloomed. And then they bloomed again this summer. Transplanting them didn't seem to slow them down. I got two others in the same shipment and they have not really done anything. I am beginning to think it is the location I planted them in. May need to move them. They all came looking very healthy with nice big roots! I hope to receive my last order tomorrow or Monday.

I used to visit his iris nursery when my kids were little, it was where we lived in the city of San Jose. I remember when he sold the property that was then developed into several homes and he bought a larger property near the coast. I visited him there a couple of times when he started into daylilies. He was so fun to talk to, so enthusiastic about his breeding program.

I would love to see the field during bloom time that is on his website!

I am thinking about putting in a small order just because.... I hate that an icon is going out of business.

Well he says he will still be hybridizing and selling through Schreiners, so just getting out of the shipping orders business.

I sure wished he would use some rust resistant cultivars in his breeding program. I always do a check on parentage before I consider any cultivars. Many of his intros/seedings have rust susceptible parents.

In my experience, anything that I have had of Bill's which had 'Wild Cherry Round Up' in its background, tended towards rust. Unfortunately, it seemed that he used this as a foundation plant for many of his daylilies because of its form, because "round as a bagel" is his thing.

I have never grown this daylily, and the database doesn't rate it for rust, but if you look at the parentage, both of those are rust buckets, so it would not surprise me at all if WCRU were also a rust bucket. Because of this, I stopped buying any plants (from Bill or anyone else) that had that daylily lurking in the background.

Bill does have other introductions which don't have WCRU in the background. I've had 'Winning Note' for a great many years, and it never had a speck of rust until this year (no doubt because it is now right next to 'Because of You', which is something of a rust bucket thanks to its two parents, 'Victorian Lace' and 'Make Believe Magic'). 'Winning Note' is such a good daylily, however, that it is worth dealing with a bit of rust on the plant. (I have seen much worse... and I did think until this past month that the plant was resistant.) I also have Bill's 'Sun Silk' and 'Golden Honey', which thus far have been rust free, and I am trying to reacquire his 'Impressionistic', which I lost. (Sad to say, but Bill seems to not keep his older introductions around for that long. Lose them, and you're out of luck, unless you can find someone else with the plant who is willing and able to share.)

I guess the moral of this all is to not get so fixated on whatever your daylily "thing" is (form, or colors/patterns, or size of flowers, or whatever) that you ignore plant health, and here is where ancestry research is beneficial (both for hybridizers and for buyers).

However.... if their customers don't care about rust because "they are spraying anyway", or because they live in cold winter climates, then there is little incentive for most hybridizers to go out of their way to address the issue of rust susceptibility.
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

Thanks for the heads up about the rust.
