I only have the regular "not snowballs" variety. I don't think I've ever seen that variety unpainted in person.

This morning we have torrential downpours and I had to go to Lowes for something not related to gardening. However on the clearance rack of plants I found this little thing nearly alone.

I got it because it has flower buds yet to open.

Thumb of 2018-07-22/Jai_Ganesha/45eba7

Normally I take a blow dryer to the glue on these fake flowers and slowly disentangle them (as much as possible, sometimes you can't completely remove all of it) but since this one also has real flower buds I am going to wait.

Ive had one of these bloom. Smelled like lemons i think.... This species(t.setispinus), and its similar looking ferocactus counterpart, are kind of the few problematic plants among that group(that being said, my experience is still pretty limited with my new "proper "soil......)

Why are they problematic? I have three other Ferocactus which don't do much but they also don't seem to have any problems.

...you misunderstood my reply. Its this particular thelocactus species, and the ferocactus species looking like it that are problematic. Most ferocacti have worked out great for me, save for: horridus, latispinus, and those few. In fact, its probably among my favorite succulent plant genera...
..//// they look like bigger versions of it, the central spine is very long. Red and yellow spine color variants...////Hamatocactus sinuatus was their name.....

This is listed as Hamatocactus hamatocanthus which is more properly known as Ferocactus hamatacanthus.

I also have a few Ferocactus latispinus, one of which I've had for years and it's been very easygoing although it hasn't bloomed.

The repeatedly didnt perform well for me. Maybe bad specimens, maybe errors in their care. Either way, ive tried growing latispinus from seed, but dont think i was too successful.

I traveled from 7am until 7pm today, buying a car. My current car has over 230,000 miles on it and is 15 years old. It was given to me by a church charity program so I have been reluctant to let it go because it has a lot of sentimental value to me.

But over the years it had become a money pit and truth be told it was trying to let ME go, so I had to bite the bullet and just go get another car. While I was traveling around I stopped at a Lowe's where I found the dead Opuntia that I posted in another thread, but they also had all of their plants for half off!

Not just houseplants, cacti, and succulents but EVERY plant, both indoors and out. I did not expect that.

Just the other day Karen suggested that I put a Pachypodium in one of my new pots so I got one.

Thumb of 2018-08-13/Jai_Ganesha/31262b

Everything you see was 50% off. I also got a fancy aloe and a few other things that I already gave away.

I also got some outside plants, including a deep purple sedum for $1.06.

If it's dry outside tomorrow I'm going to pot up all of the new succulents in more appropriate containers and melt off fake flowers but for now I'm pretty exhausted.
Keep going!

Here ya go:

The Pachypodium had extremely shallow roots so I had to top dress it with some very heavy rocks. Otherwise it would have tipped out of the pot. I'm hoping the roots spread out some now that they are not so pot-bound and in a couple months I can take those ugly rocks out.

I did not re-pot one of the Mammillarias because it was much wetter than I realized, so I am going to just leave it bare root for a week or two and let it dry out.

I did realize that the Gymnocalycium saglionis had more permanent glue damage than I thought, but there's nothing I can do about that now.

Here's a tiny Mammillaria flower. Smiling

The Pachypodium looks great in that round terracotta pot. It looks like a little oasis. Smiling

You could try this, alleviates having to use the rocks IMO.

I went to Home Depot the other day to get cactus potting mix and a grow light. I wanted to get an actual cactus for the next plant I would get, but I could not pass these two beautiful ones up.
Thumb of 2018-08-15/Blueleaf/4b898b

I named them Ophelia and Hamlet, respectively. They were the only ones like them so I had to buy them.
