wilmarosebud said:OK, I am so hooked. After joining this group about a week ago I have become hooked on succulents looking at all the wonderful plants everyone has. I really wasn't planning to start a collection, but I went a local nursery and found these little guys. I have 6 identified so far. I was thinking I may have to wait for blossoms on some of them. When I give up and can't figure the rest out I will post them on here for help.

Thumb of 2018-07-04/wilmarosebud/d9f708

As I get them planted I will post those photos.

When starting a plant collection it's a good idea to go for things in different families, generas, and growth habits. That way you can determine what you most like.

Here most of your plants are rosettes and Crassulaceaens of one sort or another.

Do you want a couple Lobivia offsets? If so, message me your address and I will send them to you. Smiling

@wilmarosebud Nice assortment of succulents. There are some familiar faces in the bunch. In your climate you may have to provide "dry" or less moisture for your succulents either by shelter or good drainage.

And beware... I will bet there are lots of enablers here. Jai already proved that. Whistling

It looks like possibly a Senecio species. There are a few hundred kinds of succulent ones, and about 1300 altogether. The genera have been split several times recently but most hobbyists still call them Senecios.

I grow a few kinds and it's hard to tell them apart sometimes. Here's a page with a lot of examples:

This one was on the top row on the left. It looks like a member of the Seneca species also. It has fatter leaves and a more bluish tint. Perhaps the blue chalk stick?

There are several species commonly called "blue chalk stick," some called simply "chalk stick" and a couple called either "green chalk stick" or "white chalk stick." As far as I know, care in cultivation is the same for all of them.

My Senecio scaposus has been blooming for a few weeks now. The flowers show well their Asteraceae (daisy) heritage. https://garden.org/thread/view...

I received my purchases from the Huntington's ISI 2018 catalog last Wednesday here are some pics:

Echinocereus pentalophus with a pure white flower and Browningia altissima

I had E. penthalophus with regular purple flower already, so thought adding an Ecinocereus with a white flower would be cool. The little Aloes are OK here if they only get morning sun. The Mangaves are an experiment, I have some others that have been doing OK here, and the plants in their parentage all have done well, but they are certainly going to want a good amount of shade.

What a great lot of new plants, Thijs! I love them all. A spotted Mangave has been on my wish list for a long time. The Aloe-x with the red is really pretty!

Can anyone order from them? Are they still taking orders?

Karen, yes anyone can order from them and they take orders throughout the year. They get a lot of orders just after the list the new plants for the year, which happened a couple of weeks ago. They even waited with shipping till we had a dip in temperatures here.

Here is the link to the catalog entry page:

http://www.huntington.org/bota...

You can also order from previous years, but they request you inquire about availability before ordering as they have sold out of many of the plants from previous years and they do not have the man power to keep the website updated with that. You can get the spotted mangaves from Plant Delights Nursery, but they are more expensive there and shipping from PDN is pretty expensive.

Do you (or anyone else) happen to know why they offer certain plants and not others?

I'm just curious how that process works, if they have an eye toward conservation (or something else).

I am not sure it is with an eye towards conservation - that may have been one of the original aims, but it does not seem to be what drives it at the moment. I think part of the original idea was to expose people to a greater diversity of succulents and related plants, so they generally (but certainly not always) have a significant variety of uncommon plants.
The last few years it sounds like it was a combination what they had available through their own nursery program and the Huntington's collection enhanced by specific plants from known other sources - like the Mangaves and some of the Haworthias this year. I think a big part is to enhance the funding for their nursery operation.
The two Mangaves for example can be had at PDN, but through the Huntington are cheaper - one is on sale at PDN so only about $2.50 cheaper, but the other one is $7.50 cheaper at the Huntington and shipping from PDN is about 3x as expensive as shipping from the Huntington.

From the Huntington.... statement of purpose below the picture. They say the money from the ISI is only used to support that program. Which in my opinion is very much worth supporting.

http://www.huntington.org/bota...

For what it's worth, you can scan previous years' catalogs and you will see a number of really outstanding species and hybrids which were probably much more scarce in cultivation in the years prior to their original ISI appearance. Another feature I really like about the ISI is the way they try to provide really good background information along with the plants. For example, about this unusual and attractive Tanzanian aloe:

http://www.huntington.org/bota...

And they even go to the trouble of listing errata as well, so they take their information seriously.

3 of my favorite plants which were ISI introductions back in the day:

When I first saw it I thought it was some kind of Tephrocactus because of the multi-stacking cladodes and total lack of spines.

But as I got closer and turned it around I realized it's an Opuntia because it is absolutely covered in bright orange glochids.

Five or six cladodes jumped off just from bringing it home. The largest are less than an inch in length. That's a standard 2" pot. The whole plant is super tiny.

It's Opuntia rufida minima.

I couldn't find it in the database but I'm on a different device than normal so I think that's why.

I see the opuntia rufida in our database, but none of the photos look right to me. They don't have the red on them.
