Thread OP

Thumb of 2016-09-20/Vanguard/e08b3c

Flower was brought home by room mate. Has six petals and leaves have parallel lines. The leaves have signs that my cat may have been eating them and I know that several species of flower are toxic to cats. Need to know what this flower is to tell my veterinarian. Please help!

I was afraid it might be a lily of some sort--they're very toxic to cats.

It's not a true lily. This site list it as safe for cats.

Peruvian Lily is just one of the common names, like Jay said, it's not a true lily.

Not sure I understand - the plant in the picture is an Alstroemeria which is not a lily or are you adding that daylilies (also not true lilies) are toxic to cats? There's a lot of debate about the latter, many people feel it is a case of misidentifying daylilies as lilies because their own cats eat daylilies without getting ill.

@truckerwife2018, I guess you missed the above comments correctly IDing the pictured plant, which is not even remotely close to a lily (lilium) or a daylily (hemerocallis). Cats can only get ill from lilies, lilium, as sooby mentioned above. Orange Vols is a daylily, not a Lily.

Just a note here as a former floral designer and not as a cat expert -
We were warned that the Alstroemeria can cause skin irritation in some people. That being said, if a cat ingests some of the Alstroemeria the oxalates can cause irritation and distress for the cat; the cat may become ill and need to vomit to eliminate the plant material.

I found this about toxicity to cats from Alstroemeria on the ASPCA's FB page:

https://www.facebook.com/aspca...

Alstroemeria, according to the ASPCA, are in the Tulipa family. Who knew Whistling Botany is apparently not their strong point.

I saw that too, Greene. I guess they assumed that because it has the same toxin as in tulips that both plants were in the same family.
