I really haven't had time to take photos, but I grabbed the camera the other day. Most of my blooms are pretty fried. Temps cooled down for a couple of days, then it rained for two more days. This has not been a year for photos.

It's late, so I am only going to share a couple

I just love Cherry Brandy! I looked for it for years and finally found it on Hortico's website about 10 years ago. They kept putting it on "back order" while I kept ordering it for about five years in a row. Finally, they sent me one, but it was such a puny little thing that it produced one pale, washed-out bloom and then never produced another. It's still alive, but it seems to have only enough energy to produce a little bit of foliage. One of these days I'm going to dig it up and stop expecting it to suddenly start thriving. Hope springs eternal, but there has to be a limit to false optimism, even in my garden. Crying

Great photos, Sharlene and Lyn. Thumbs up

Today is the day of the Double Ninth Festival in China (9th day of the 9th month of the Chinese calendar). It's a stretch, but 'Rosie O'Donnell,' one of my favorite roses, is also known as 'Ninety-Niner,' so that's our Rose of the Day.

Westerland is no more! I carried out the unpleasant task today. It was already here when we moved in 10 years ago, growing in a totally inappropriate spot and it was really battling so I potted and pampered it for a year and then planted it out into the garden where it has spent the last 8 years. A couple of weeks ago, I notice that a new basal shoot looked a little off colour so I had a closer look. On removing the soil around the crown I discovered this ..
Thumb of 2016-10-10/sunnyvalley/f2915b

This is the second case of crown gall that I have had and that just three months after the first. This is also in a different section of the garden which is actually a little worrying. It looks like I just have to accept the fact that this bacteria is present in our garden! Now I know what to look for but I hope I don't see it again.

Zuzu, at least seeing your rose selection for today cheered me up a little. I am not familiar with Thanksgiving (any of them because I see there are two more roses that go by that name) but Christopher Columbus is a rose that I can really recommend. Always puts on a stunning show here!

Today is the International Day of the Girl. We have so many roses with "girl" in their names, but 'School Girl' seems to be the best choice for our Rose of the Day in view of the holiday's stated goal of "educating and empowering the girl child."

Sharlene, I have two of the Thanksgiving roses in my garden, and they're both hybrid teas. The one I've posted for Canada's Thanksgiving Day was bred by Arthur Howard in 1965. The other, which I'll post on the United States' Thanksgiving Day, was bred by William Warriner in 1962. I think it's interesting that the parents of both of the roses include a rose bred by Fred Howard.

Sharlene, so sorry about your Westerland, it certainly was a stunner. That garden shot is worthy of a magazine cover! I love the way the heuchera echoes the color of Westerland.

@gemini_sage
Neal, thank you - your words are really appreciated! I really needed someone to sympathise with me. I read you article on your experience with RRD so you know first hand what it feels like being forced to remove a rose. I truly hope that these are just two isolated cases!
I am going to have to find some other plant to compliment the heuchera now and was thinking about putting in some iris? But that will have to wait until next year.

Yesterday, I started preparing the holes for the new roses I ordered. 16 in total which should be delivered at the month. Quite hard going because of all the stones. Managed to get 3 done yesterday - 13 to go!

16 new roses. So exciting! I hope the bacterium is limited to those two spots, Sharlene. It would be awful if you lost more of your roses.

D'Oh! that should read 'at the end of the month' - I really should preview my posts before pressing the finished button!! Big Grin

Zuzu, it would be awful but Crossing Fingers!

The 16 new roses is pushing it a bit but it is exciting.

That's funny. I would have sworn it did say "end of the month." That's how I read it. Hilarious!

I also will have 16 to plant this fall: the 8 I'll be receiving from Palatine and the 8 from A Reverence for Roses that are still in containers.

There's a chance that I'll also get 8 from Hortico. I thought I was through ordering from Hortico after getting those tiny plants at the end of last season, but they're offering Cressida again. I ordered Cressida twice from Hortico years ago and received mislabeled rugosa roses instead both times.

Hopefully they get it right the third time round! I had the same experience with Blackberry Nip. The first time I got Black Baccara - not far off but I already had one in that bed. The second time I got Goldelse which really didn't fit into the scheme. They got it right the third time Hurray! The thing about getting wrong deliveries of bare root roses is that you only find out about 6 months later that its not the expected rose and I find it most irritating having to transplant again and again .....
